Disgraced Synopsis

From the Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama and author of Homeland Elegies, a play about identity in America after September 11th.

Amir is a successful Pakistani-American lawyer living in New York with his white artist wife, Emily. Although he's distanced himself from his Muslim heritage, his past and identity become increasingly difficult to escape. When he and Emily host a dinner with friends from different cultural and religious backgrounds, a seemingly intellectual conversation about Islam and American society grows increasingly tense.

The play explores identity, religion, racism, assimilation, and prejudice, showing how quickly hidden beliefs and personal resentments can surface. As the characters confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and one another, Amir's carefully constructed life begins to fall apart, forcing him to question where he belongs and how much of his identity he has sacrificed to fit into American society.

"Everyone has been told that politics and religion are two subjects that should be off-limits at social gatherings. But watching these characters rip into these forbidden topics, there's no arguing that they make for ear-tickling good theater." -New York Times
