In 1983, the small town of Barris was rocked by an awful murder. Police chief Howard Mendel knew he was miles out of his depth, but against all odds, he solved the murder - or, at least, after hours of intense interrogation, he extracted a confession.

Ten years later, the supposed killers have been exonerated, the investigation discredited, and Barris is trying to move on.

Then another teenager disappears: Heather Dunsmore, the town's golden girl. Her best friend, Journey Johnson - niece of the first victim - is the last person to see her alive.

For Mendel, this could be one last chance at redemption. But as Barris turns in on itself once more, and the buried truths of that long-ago night begin to stir, he's forced to confront the mistake that's haunted him for a decade.

Because sooner or later, Mendel can sense this investigation will end the way the last one did - with a suspect in a cell, a ticking clock, and a town desperate for closure.

All they'll need is a confession.
