This is ace American police procedural stuff with heart, grit, tension and twists galore, all neatly brought together in the last chapters. Itâs a bit slow to start, a bit wordy at times, but itâs got something rather special. I think heâs well worth investing in. Try his Black Water too, itâs terrific.

Millionaire Pete Braga has been found bludgeoned to death in his San Diego mansion. Homicide cop Tom McMichael is on the case, but the Irish McMichaels and the Portuguese Bragas share a violent history as fifty years ago Braga shot McMichaelâs grandfather dead, then McMichaelâs father was accused of an attack that left Bragaâs thirteen-year-old son brain-damaged.
Tom must put aside the feud and find the killer. But the investigation is to unfold like a bloody bloom, encompassing Bragaâs business and family, the Catholic diocese, a multi-million dollar Indian casino, a prostitute, a cop, and, of course, McMichaelâs own family.

An example of how a good police procedural can transcend the questions, answers and hunch-playing. The plot strands fly in all directions, but Jefferson manages to keep order, slowly progressing via a few surprise turnarounds to an unexpected denouement Time Out

Jefferson Parker (known as T Jefferson Parker in the States) was born in LA in 1953. He worked as a newspaper journalist in California, covering the crime beat, where his novels all reflect the sunny wickedness of his home state.
He is the author of twelve novels; both ‘Silent Joe’ and ‘California Girl’ won the prestigious Edgar award (the equivalent of our CWA Gold Dagger). His latest novel, set in San Diego, features a detective with synaesthesia. ‘The Fallen’ is published in hardback in May 2006.
Jefferson lives in Laguna Beach, California. When not working on his books, he spends his time with his family, hiking, hunting and fishing, and haunting the public tennis courts.
