Reviewed and selected by our poetry expert, Liam Parkin.

James Fenton is an experienced, formally masterful, delicately playful and often humorous poet. As a man that has travelled to many different countries, it is no surprise to find geographical locations a large part of his poetry career. Indeed, through this collection spanning just over forty years of his work, the diverse landscapes he has visited, and the cultures he has experienced inform his politically charged verse, of ‘those to whom geography condemns to war’. This collection brings together his more recent uncollected poems, assembled by himself, and is a true testament to the award-winning writer, who continues to this day to retain the deserved status of a fine poet. From war to love to elegies, Yellow Tulips not only encompasses a remarkable career, but a similarly remarkable political meditation. We can only hope he hasn’t finished yet.

Synopsis

Yellow Tulips Poems, 1968-2011 by James Fenton

Poems is an essential selection by, as Stephen Spender put it, 'a brilliant poet of technical virtuosity'. Don't talk to me of love. I've had an earful And I get tearful when I've downed a drink or two. I'm one of your talking wounded. I'm a hostage. I'm maroonded. But I'm in Paris with you. From In Paris With You by James Fenton.

Winner of both the Queen's Gold Medal and the Whitbread Prize for Poetry, the author has given readers some of the most memorable lyric verse of the past decades, from the formal skill that marked his debut, Terminal Moraine, to the dramatic and political monologues of The Memory of War and Children in Exile.
