After the jaw-dropping ending of Silvercloak, I have been waiting with bated breath for the next instalment in the saga. Following immediately on from the disastrous events at the end of the first book (If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend you do), undercover turncloak Saffron Killoran’s revenge was snatched away, leading her down an even more turbulent path, determined to use her long-dormant power to set things right for herself and for the enemy she’s fallen for.

Meanwhile, Levan Celadon finds himself kingpin of the Bloodmoons and betrayed by the one he loves. Rival gangs grow more brazen and he’s questioning everything that brought him to this point; Levan stands at a crossroads with all paths uncertain. Far from the typical dark powerful MMC, the more we learn about Levan the more torture and turmoil revealed which makes me love his character more.

The Silvercloaks are still on their trail, with the ambitious Auria Marriosan and the ruthless Nissa Naszi forming an interesting new dynamic that I’m eager to see develop.

And believe me, all that is just scratching the surface: there’s lost prophecies, voices from the grave, horrifying magical creatures, power taken to new levels and faces from the past returned. The brilliant magic system is given even more nuance as the stakes are raised in this gritty fantasy series.

L.K. Steven is a master of the revelation and cliffhanger; I found myself having to pick my jaw up off the floor regularly as revelations had my mind spinning about possible implications and I am left once again keenly awaiting the next book. This series is a must-read for dark fantasy fans and quickly becoming one of my favourites for its gripping storyline, fascinating characters and the possibilities that have me spiralling.
