"Red Verdict continues James Comey’s legal thriller series featuring prosecutor Nora Carleton. Drawing on the author’s extensive background in law enforcement and the justice system, the novel combines courtroom drama, political intrigue, and international tension into a fast-moving and accessible thriller."
With one caveat (in the case of Red Verdict) the greatest strength in Comey’s novels is their authenticity. The author writes convincingly about prosecutors, investigators, intelligence agencies and the complex interplay between law, politics and national security. The procedural details feel grounded in real-world experience without becoming overly technical. Readers who enjoy legal thrillers will appreciate the insight into how major investigations in the United States unfold and how evidence is gathered, challenged and presented.
The plot revolves around a high-stakes case with geopolitical implications, giving the story a broader scope than a conventional courtroom drama. Comey effectively creates tension by weaving together legal strategy, personal risk and international power struggles. The pacing is generally strong with frequent developments that keep readers engaged and eager to discover how the various threads connect.
Nora Carleton remains a compelling and interesting protagonist. She is intelligent, determined and morally driven, yet she faces difficult choices that prevent her from becoming a one-dimensional hero. Her partnership with Benny Dugan provides a useful balance between legal and journalistic perspectives, allowing the narrative to explore both official investigations and the public narratives surrounding them.
The caveat. In this novel – and it’s important to note that it is a novel – the investigation follows the murder of an executive using the nerve agent Novichock. In this case, it will be necessary for the reader to suspend belief and, provided you do so, the story that unfolds is very enjoyable. I say ‘suspend belief’ because the assertion by characters in the novel that Novichock is not transmittable through skin contact is not correct, and the resulting rather casual responses by the health and investigative authorities are, most certainly, very different from the real-life scenario that played out in the UK, at Salisbury, and what ought to have happened in the fictional situation described.
Despite this minor shortcoming, Red Verdict succeeds as an intelligent and engaging thriller. It offers more than suspense alone; exploring questions of justice, accountability and the challenges democratic institutions face in an increasingly complex world. Readers looking for a fast-paced legal thriller with credible procedural detail and contemporary relevance will likely find much to enjoy.
Delivers a thoughtful and entertaining story that reflects the author’s unique professional experience.
