A fascinating insight into the world of lookalikes. On retiring from being a headteacher, Jane Mosse embraced her uncanny resemblance to Camilla, the now Queen of England, by stepping into the world of celebrity lookalikes. From the double takes she’s always received walking down the street to passer’s by and shop assistants enquiring after the rest of the royal family, to pupils at her school asking parents why their headteacher is marrying Prince Charles, her appearance has created a wealth of amusing anecdotes to share.

And that’s outside of the jobs she’s been offered. From appearances on television to parts in Bollywood movies, Being Camilla offers an entertaining insight into the unusual world of the lookalike. A well-crafted narrative that is told in an engaging way, offering readers a glimpse into the all consuming world of lookalikes.

Unlike any other acting role, looking like someone means that work can so easily seep into day-to-day life, from those wanting photos to the possibility of danger from going about your life during certain news cycles. Mosse shares about a David Beckham lookalike that received death threats, and her own concerns about being in London when the anti-monarchy protests are focused on in the news.

This role offered a lot of unique opportunities shared in a way that was engaging and fun to read but also gave insight into what it takes to be a lookalike: having to build up a specific wardrobe, maintain a certain style, avoiding going out when it could cause a negative reaction, and even having opportunities dry up upon the death of the figure or when certain circumstances change.

Mosse highlights the realities of the role, the importance of being selective with roles and shows how it can take over a lot of your life. This is an intriguing and unique look into a world most of us won’t be familiar with, removing the mask from the realm of the lookalikes.

I really enjoyed this book, told with humour, and honesty. I learned a lot about the industry and the production side too.

The inside view of the life of a lookalike royal. It sounds great fun, with long moments of anxiety in new places with new people and not knowing what the job was - I found it quite strange that the agent would accept a job for someone without knowing what it was for. The author makes it very plain there are things she will not do - nothing disrespectful or risque. The cost of clothes can be huge so bargain hunting is a must but certain pieces of the jewellery have to be made, which are not cheap either. It's hard work; learning the ropes as a beginner; jobs at short notice; finding a hairdresser who can fit you in and not mess up the look; keeping up with what your subject is wearing; even down to keeping the same size and age as the subject....
