A twisting psychological thriller with elements of horror and the supernatural. Andrew Goodwin experiences a near fatal car accident and after he recovers he experiences strange disturbances, scratching on the walls and moments of missing memory. As these episodes become more intense he starts to hear voices and loses even more time. Trapped and scared, Andrew starts to uncover more about his blackouts, but will he be able to find an answer and reclaim his mind and his life. ‘Affinities’ by Hollis Thompson is a twisting psychological thriller that I’d encourage you to read, not read about in order to avoid spoilers. Putting me in mind of Jekyll and Hyde and even faintly reminding me of watching Donnie Darko, this thriller is flavoured with elements of horror and the supernatural to keep you at the edge of your seat. There is a lot of detailed imagery, the description of Andrew’s nightmare and the cold fried breakfast was impactful and turned my stomach. I also liked the use of different perspectives, the plot adds a layer of complexity to the book’s structure but ‘Affinities’ is well-paced and builds plenty of tension to keep you reading. A gripping thriller with a teaser of more to come.
What if the voice inside your head wanted out? Andrew Goodwin hears voices. They wake him in the dead of night, lingering behind the walls, growing steadily more intense until they take control. Making him captive in his own home. These voices are real. Andrew doesn't know who they are or what they want, but every time he approaches the door, they somehow force him back. Whenever he wakes up in the daylight, they put him right back to sleep, making him live on stolen moments in the darkness. Desperate, he records his own movements, and discovers his entire life is a lie – Andrew is somehow leaving the flat each day as though things were perfectly normal. So why doesn’t he remember? Who is in control? And why are there bruises and bloodstains all over his body?
