Lovereading view...

Shortlisted for the John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger Award 2016.

A woman sheltered in the Witness Protection Programme for the almost justified murder of her cop husband twenty years ago discovers that one of the children she had to put up for adoption has gone missing, possibly kidnapped. Now a hopeless drunk and a soul with no hope left, she finds her vocation and redemption for past sins in savagely hunting down whoever is responsible, whilst confronting her troubled past. A humdinger of a flawed heroine and a gallery of colourful, imperfect characters spanning every shade from black to grey populate her breakneck quest. A tale of the ties that bind families together in spite of adversity, this is a novel that will tug at the heartstrings while holding you hooked its fast-paced plot. Definitely a keeper. ~ Maxim Jakubowski

The Lovereading view...

With a hammer hitting hard prologue, this intensely powerful thriller starts, continues and finishes with provocative words and action. Set in the USA, a mother surfaces from a witness protection program and races to find and save her child. Freedom is a truly distinctive and remarkable character, it takes a little while to get to her know her, to ease into step alongside her, her fractured yet defiant soul is announced with every word she speaks. With a strong cast of characters, some positively loathsome, others a well needed determined and steadfast, the author keeps the plot incredibly taut and dynamic. Jax Miller has written a stimulating and excitingly different debut novel, ‘Freedom’s Child’ sets itself firmly apart from the masses and stands brilliantly and defiantly alone. ~ Liz Robinson

  • Debbie Johnston - 'Freedom's Child is a cracking read that I'd highly recommend. The language can be a bit flowery at times but it fits perfectly with Freedom's lifestyle and environment. I loved this book!'
  • Genevieve McAllister - 'Jax Miller’s debut thriller is a fast-moving, tough-talking and hard-hitting exploration into how far the individual will go to assimilate into a different society, and what it means to be a mother.'
  • Vicki Sharman - 'Fast paced from beginning to end and a constant rollercoaster of emotions. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to open their 'inner Freedom'. I can't wait to read what's next from Jax Miller.'
  • Gavin Dimmock - 'What a pulsating, driving rush this book is. It is a superbly crafted novel and thoroughly mesmerising...It reads easily, rather like a gritty graphic novel, and is very hard to put down.'
  • Phylippa Smithson - 'This gritty, disturbing, powerful and carefully exposed thriller is page-turningly brilliant.'
  • Sue Burton - 'Fast paced novel with many twists and turns.  Reminded me of a Dean Koontz book.'
  • Nikki Whitmore - 'I read Freedom's Child over a couple of days but only because I have to work to fund my book habit otherwise I'm pretty sure I'd have devoured it in an afternoon.'
  • Angie Rhodes - 'This is a rollercoaster of a book, and one hell of a read.'
  • Reba Khatun - 'Beautifully written, fast-paced, it held my attention till the very last word.   A great read even though it does cover sensitive subjects.  Jax Miller is definitely an author to watch.'
  • Annette Woolfson - 'The plot was just too contrived, downright unbelievable in places in fact and, without sounding prudish, I found it unnecessarily crude at times.'
  • Debbie Patrick - 'A heart-stopping debut thriller about a woman named Freedom, who will stop at nothing to save the daughter she only knew for two minutes and seventeen seconds.'
  • Tanya Thurling - 'Your thrown into the action from the get go and it doesn't slow down...a darn good thriller.'
  • Oliver Keating - 'Jax Miller's debut novel tells the story of Freedom's Child, a fast moving pacey novel. She is a very gutsy character and I couldn't help but admire her.'
  • Margaret Madden - 'A debut to be read with the knowledge that you will get nothing done once you start! Unputdownable! Thrills, thrills and more thrills, with a kick-ass female protagonist.  Not for faint hearted.'
  • Nicola Cooper - 'This book was not for me as it was a little far-fetched although I think others may enjoy it.  It certainly wasn’t boring!'

Synopsis

Freedom's Child by Jax Miller

A heart-stopping debut thriller about a woman named Freedom, who will stop at nothing to save the daughter she only knew for two minutes and seventeen seconds. Call me what you will: a murderer, a cop killer, a fugitive, a drunk...There's a lot people don't know about Freedom Oliver. They know she works at the local bar. They know she likes a drink or two. What they don't know is that Freedom is not her real name. That she has spent the last eighteen years living under Witness Protection, after being arrested for her husband's murder. They don't know that she put her two children up for adoption, a decision that haunts her every day. Then Freedom's daughter goes missing, and everything changes. Determined to find her, Freedom slips her handlers and heads to Kentucky where her kids were raised. No longer protected by the government, she is tracked by her husband's sadistic family, who are thirsty for revenge. But as she gets closer to the truth, Freedom faces an even more dangerous threat. She just doesn't know it yet.
