Sarah Broadhurst's view...

One of our Books of the Year 2015.

April 2015 MEGA Book of the Month.

What a terrific and powerful book, I reckon it is her best yet. It covers race, adoption, rejection and even murder (or does it?). Our hero, Smithy, a black girl, white adopted parents, white long-term boyfriend, discovers her biological family in Brighton. Naturally there are secrets in the cupboard but you certainly don’t see the details coming. With a jealous and bitchy cousin and a demanding, and frankly most unpleasant ‘birth’ grandmother both making unreasonable requests, this is, as I’ve said, terrific, especially when the final twist hits you in the stomach.

If you like Dorothy Koomson you might also like to read books by Donna Hay, Jodi Picoult and Michelle Richmond.

Reader Reviews

In addition to our Lovereading expert opinion some of our Reader Review Panel were also lucky enough to read and review this title. You can click here to read the full reviews.

  • Cheryl Kinney - 'well written and beautiful. The difficult subjects covered are written about in a sensitive way.'
  • Lisa Lamb - 'A nice, easy read with a few little mysteries along the way and a surprising twist at the end...'
  • Tanya Thurling - 'plenty of shock revelations along the way to keep you intrigued and the story keeps at a steady pace from start to finish. I'd definitely recommend this book.'
  • Sandra Rabiasz - 'A thoroughly engrossing story of families and identity. I've never read Dorothy Koomson before and, if this book is anything to go by, I've been missing out.'
  • Edel Waugh - 'very true to life and the story delicately told. I will certainly be reading more by this author in the future, without a doubt!'
  • Kath Martin - 'After a shaky start where I was totally confused by this books opening few pages, I suddenly 'got it' and became totally captivated by Clemency's life.'
  • Oliver Keating - 'This is not your straight forward adoption mystery case from Dorothy Kooman. Someone wants something from Smitty and it is something most of us would avoid at all costs.'
  • Katie Wright - 'That Girl From Nowhere, is a strong addition to Koomson's work.'
  • Joan Sidwell - 'This is a beautiful book, sensitively written and multi-layered with sympathetic, believable characters...a book to be savoured and read again.'
  • Vikki Patis - 'The story is fast-paced and intricate, full of intriguing characters you can’t wait to learn more about. I absolutely loved this novel. Koomson is one of my favourite authors'
  • Nikki Whitmore - 'Based on the blurb, I thought it was just going to be the story of an adopted woman trying to find her birth parents but it was so much more than that.'
  • Emma Barton - 'I felt as though I was reading the first draft of a potentially enthralling new book.'
  • Phylippa Smithson - 'A story of life starting, life ending and what happens in between, for an adopted child.  Full of humour, sadness and disappointment for the star, Clemency, well worth reading.'
  • Anne Rhodes - 'A question is asked of her – will she say yes, can she say no...her head wants to go one way and her heart wants to go another.'
  • Tracey Copeland - unfortunately I found this book very difficult to get into, it didn’t grab me at all and normally I cannot wait until the working day ends to catch up with my book.'

A big thank you for the two Lovereading bags I ordered, which have arrived safely. I love mine and will use it with pride. The bags are lovely quality, sturdy and support a good cause in the Rewrap initiative; I think they make the perfect accessory for any book lover. The second bag was a gift for my sister and she says she will take it to her next book group meeting to help spread the Lovereading word. Once again, many thanks. Emily Wright

Synopsis

That Girl from Nowhere by Dorothy Koomson

This is an emotional thriller about love, identity and the meaning of family. 'Where are you coming from with that accent of yours? he asks. "Nowhere,' I reply. 'I'm from nowhere.' 'Everyone's from somewhere,' he says. 'Not me,' I reply silently.

Clemency Smittson was adopted as a baby and the only connection she has to her birth mother is a cardboard box hand-decorated with butterflies. Now an adult, Clem decides to make a drastic life change and move to Brighton, where she was born. Clem has no idea that while there she'll meet someone who knows all about her butterfly box and what happened to her birth parents. As the tangled truths about her adoption and childhood start to unravel, a series of shocking events cause Clem to reassess whether the price of having contact with her birth family could be too high to pay...
