The title actually refers to a daughter meeting her father and not the man of her life as one might imagine. Her mother has always told Marianne that he went to Australia but he was actually in prison for arson and manslaughter. Now he is out and dying of cancer. He wants to know his daughters, Marianne and her sister Hayley. Marianne is a gifted violinist who has never pursued her love. He persuades her to apply to the Royal College of Music.
