Dr. Follansbee is a materials scientist and engineer with 35 years combined experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Howmet Castings, General Electric Corporate Research and Development, and Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. He earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1981. He has a strong interest in high temperature materials and materials processing and has published extensively in the area of low temperature and high strain rate deformation behavior. He proposed and developed an internal state variable constitutive model - termed the Mechanical Threshold Stress Model - and applied it to Cu, Ni, Ti-6Al-4V and several other metals. For the past 20 years he has served at various levels of technology management and leadership, including positions as Vice President of Technology for Howmet Castings and Division Leader of the Materials Science and Technology Division at Los Alamos.
