A flamboyantly fantastical literary voyage in which two strangers stranded at a Spanish airport during a strike are brought together by their mutual travel agent, whose Guide for the Perplexed travel book they both have. Executed with intellectual and sensual exuberance, this ingeniously original novel defies definition at every turn as the two marooned women share their remarkable stories. Holland is a British filmmaker and in Spain to interview a reclusive violinist, while Miami widow Hanni is set on finding a letter that will confirm her ancestral connection to Esau, purportedly the real discoverer of the New World. The language dances and sparkles as the narrative traverses time, religions and momentous historical events, and the serpentine structure of stories within stories is a flabbergasting imaginative feat. Truly a Pandora’s box of cerebral delights in the vein of Eco and Calvino, it dazzles, and demands one’s absolute attention. ~ Joanne Owen
An exuberantly entertaining magic realist quest that sees a Cambridge Organ Scholar travel to Rome in search of love, with extraordinarily unexpected results. It all started with a pip, for it was The Pip that brought Malory and maths genius Louiza together in the eaves of a Cambridge church. When she vanishes after their first encounter, Malory resolves that “the Pip would be his guide” as he searches for her. The road he takes leads - naturally - to Rome. But nothing in this labyrinthine, playfully philosophical fable is simple. There are no smooth, straight roads for Malory, who discovers in Rome that he’s the heir to the Kingdom of Septimania and subsequently hailed King of the Jews, and more besides. The style is nimble, the language lithe and infused with a wonderful sense of whimsy. Indeed, something of the tone put me in mind of Alice in Wonderland at times. Brilliantly bonkers, quick-witted and compelling, this joyous jamboree of a book demands one’s full attention, and thoroughly deserves more than one reading. ~ Joanne Owen

Based on exclusive interviews and featuring shocking revelations from their associates, this explosive and gripping read includes fresh information on the whereabouts of 'Basil' - the only robber still at large - and evidence from unheard sources. Concentrating on pieces of treen related to eating and drinking, this book celebrates the range and richness of the turner's art from 1600 to 1900. It covers a wide range of objects for everyday use - goblets to nutcrackers, platters to lemon squeezers, and wassail bowls to egg cups. The book discusses the work of the jobbing village turner or bodger , the skilled craftsman's workshop and the grand Court turner producing complex rose engine turning. It illustrates pieces only to be found in museums and examples you can find today in local antiques markets or fairs. Information is given on where treen may be seen and found and there is practical advice on pitfalls for the collector, dating and cleaning, as well as a chapter dealing with surfaces and patina and one asking for reader's help in identifying the purpose of some curious objects.
