Quentin Blake - Author

About the Author

Quentin Blake taught for many years at the Royal College of Art, where he was head of the Illustration Department from 1978 to 1986. As well as being known for his collaborations with writers such as Russell Hoban and Roald Dahl, his own creations, such as Mister Magnolia, have contributed to his reputation as one of the world's leading illustrators and an inspiration for artists everywhere. He was, in the words of The Guardian, 'already a national institution' when he was appointed the first Children's Laureate in 1999. He is particularly engaged in enabling art to reach a young audience, as was the case with the immensely popular touring exhibition 'Tell Me a Picture' held at the National Gallery in 2001.

100 Figures The Unseen Art of Quentin Blake

100 Figures The Unseen Art of Quentin Blake

Author: Quentin Blake Format: Hardback Release Date: 06/09/2018

Quentin Blake's illustrations are instantly recognisable to millions of people around the world. A new exhibition to be held at London's House of Illustration will explore an unusual aspect of Blake's work, however, exhibiting for the first time 100 examples of his works of art. 100 Figures, will feature all of the 100 exhibited works - ranging from large-scale oil paintings to drawings and prints, created between the 1950s and today. Works included date back to his post-grad years in the 1950s when he struggled to make a living as an illustrator and took life-drawing classes at Chelsea School of Art. It was here that he first engaged with the human figure, but soon, having observed how the human body behaves, he found he was able to draw it from memory in any pose, working from his vivid imagination. 100 Figures will also offer the chance to catch a rare glimpse of early oil paintings by Blake - some painted on hardboard since he was unable to afford canvases at that time and painted using commercial house-painters' brushes.

Words and Pictures

Words and Pictures

Author: Quentin Blake Format: Paperback Release Date: 03/10/2013

Following on from our hugely successful publication of Beyond the Page, we are thrilled to be publishing Words and Pictures in paperback for the first time. This is the fascinating insight into Quentin's work before Beyond the Page, from the start of his career until 2000. The words describe his approach to the challenges and opportunities of illustration; the pictures, chosen from fifty years of publication, show the progress from his first experience of Punch magazine to the publishing of his own-authored picture books such as Fantastic Daisy Artichoke. Some are familiar, such as those of Roald Dahl's Matilda, or the BFG, while others are from early in his career, and some - roughs, layouts and personal drawings - will be completely new to most readers. This unusual book is not only a chance to examine the artistic development of one of our most distinguished illustrators, but a guide to the world of illustration as well as all those interested in children's books, humour, or quite simply the pleasures of drawing.
