About the Author

A former journalist, busker, playwright and TV comedy producer, Nigel Smith has worked with many of the UK's middlest-sized names in showbusiness. He created and co-wrote the BBC One sitcom Doctors and Nurses. He wrote the highly acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series Vent, which is when his mum stopped talking to him. He's half responsible for the popular BBC Radio 2 comedy Teenage Kicks. This time his kids stopped talking to him. Cue: mouldy log cabins, potholing, map reading and more totally boring `geography stuff' - all the things that Nat hates... and Dad loves! Of COURSE he volunteers to come along on the trip as a parent helper. History Plays

History Plays

Author: Nigel Smith Format: eBook Release Date: 09/05/2012

The History Plays is a series of five two-hander plays by Vent author Nigel Smith, which are imagined conversations at key moments in recent history, moments that have permanently changed the British psyche. Starting with Mick Jagger's conviction for drug possession and the surprising pro-Jagger line taken in a Times editorial; through the fragmented morality of John Stonehouse; the Indian summer of patriotism over the Falklands; the death of Diana; and the end of the Blair years, The History Plays are a satirical and thoughtful exploration of huge social forces played out in small human dramas. This is a series about the promises and pitfalls of history, the points of conflict. But what's really significant is what these moments say about our attitudes and assumptions now.The plays included are:Jagger in JailIt is 1967, the summer of love and Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones, is in prison starting his three-month sentence for drug possession. His trial - and particularly his sentence - has both scandalised and split public opinion. Jagger in Jail imagines the conversation that might have taken place between Mick and a cellmate, Jim, during what turned out to be his only night behind bars. As the night passes, Jim and Mick find that while they have a fair bit in common, society's plans for them could not be more different. And Jim isn't too happy about it..Starring Kayvan Novak ("e;Facejacker"e;) as Mick Jagger and Blake Harrison ("e;The Inbetweeners"e;) as Jim.Stonehouse in AliceIt's 1974 and Ed Jennings, a cub reporter from a local paper has stumbled upon the scoop of a lifetime while on holiday in Australia. Leonard has found missing maverick MP, John Stonehouse, who recently faked his death to escape from a sea of debt, the fraud squad, his wife, and a series of misadventures back home in the UK. A charmer, a snob, an aesthete, a writer and a con man, the Walsall North MP, once one of the greatest loose cannons of his political generation, is now in hiding, shacked up with his mistress in one of the loneliest places on earth. What will be kept secret for decades, however, is that he's also a communist spy. But Stonehouse has an offer for the young reporter. One that will change both their lives.Starring Tim McInnerny as John Stonehouse and Daniel Rigby as Ed Jennings.Maggie Heart GaltieriMaggie Watkins finds a young Argentinean soldier, Christian Galtieri, in her kitchen, wounded and in need of shelter. As she slowly learns why he is in hiding the pair fall in love, but as their relationship grows the Task Force lands and it becomes harder and harder to ignore the larger forces at play around them.Starring Josie Lawrence as Maggie and Javier Marzan as Galtieri.O Salutaris Hostia, DianaMartha and Graham look back over their lives together, but their very different views on Diana mask a far more personal conflict, and Graham's dislike of the princess has its roots in his pain over the circumstances of their son Alan's death.Starring Imelda Staunton as Martha and Toby Jones as Graham.A History of Blair in 9 1/2 VoicesTony Blair is lost in the winding corridors of the BBC the day after his resignation. He finds himself sharing a room with Sue, a struggling impressionist who assumes he is a Tony Blair lookalike. Blair enjoys the opportunity to talk about himself in the third person, and to show off a few impressions of his own. A darkly comic but thoughtful exploration of what makes Blair tick, the play gives a compelling explanation for what may have lain behind Blair's early political successes and what prompted his unwavering commitment to the war in Iraq.Starring Jon Culshaw as Tony Blair and Fiona Allen as Sue.Produced by Gareth Edwards.

Andrew Marvell The Chameleon

Andrew Marvell The Chameleon

Author: Nigel Smith Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 20/03/2012

The seventeenth-century poet Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) is one of the most intriguing figures in English literature. A noted civil servant under Cromwell's Protectorate, he has been variously identified as a patriot, spy, conspirator, concealed homosexual, father to the liberal tradition, and incendiary satirical pamphleteer and freethinker. But while Marvell's poetry and prose has attracted a wide modern following, his prose is known only to specialists, and much of his personal life remains shrouded in mystery. Nigel Smith's pivotal biography provides an unparalleled look into Marvell's life, from his early employment as a tutor and gentleman's companion to his suspicious death, reputedly a politically fueled poisoning. Drawing on exhaustive archival research, the voluminous corpus of Marvell's previously little known writing, and recent scholarship across several disciplines, Smith's portrait becomes the definitive account of this elusive life.

Literature and Revolution in England, 1640-1660

Literature and Revolution in England, 1640-1660

Author: Nigel Smith Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 13/05/1997

The years of the British Civil War and Interregnum constituted a turning point not only in the political, social, and religious history of seventeenth-century England but also in the use and meaning of English language and literature. Smith examines literary output from the age from Milton's Paradise Lost to epics and romances, to psalms and hymns. This highly original book explores the effect of politics on the practice of writing and the impact of literature on patterns of historical change. Whether dealing with gallant love-lyrics by Herrick or Lovelace or with a major work of the order of Hobbes's Leviathan or Paradise Lost, Smith shows the same sensitivity to inner tensions and topical resonances. He has done a signal service to all students of this watershed period. -Anthony Curtis, Financial Times A valuable new study. . . . [This] well-researched book provides an impressive survey of the period's varied literature and shows how its generic innovations were a creative response to the crises of the 1640s and 50s. . . . Thanks to Smith, we now have a richer, more complete account of the ways literature and political culture interacted during this unsettled age of civil war, reformation and revolution. -David Loewenstein, Times Literary Supplement Cogently and with a daunting range of examples, Smith demonstrates how Smith takes a relatively overlooked period in England's literary history . . . and reminds us of its vitality and centrality. His theory, which is solid if not profound, asserts a peculiar correspondence between art and society. Smith's work is important simply because of its intense focus on this tumultuous period in literary and social history. -Virginia Quarterly Review An impressive and gracefully written book which cannot help but enlighten its readers. -D. R. Woolf, Canadian Journal of History Nigel Smith is Fellow and Tutor in English at Keble College, Oxford.
