A former lawyer, Monica Janssens is well qualified to write a book about depression. In the summer of 2005 she was diagnosed with panic disorder and severe clinical depression and admitted to a rehabilitation clinic in South West London. So, she's 'been there' in every sense of the phrase - both as a personal sufferer who has been to hell and back, and as a sensitive observer of the emotional sufferings of others.
When she regained her health, Monica - a writer and an actress - decided to describe the experience in a novel which would expose the realities of emotional illness, and explore society's role in creating it. Most of all, she wanted to break down the stigma that still attaches to an illness that by 2020 will be the second most disabling condition in the world after heart disease.
