Candi Miller was born and educated in Africa, but now lives in England where she teaches Creative Writing. In 1994 she undertook an expedition to the Kalahari Desert to visit groups of San people. There she was caught up in one of the largest veld fires ever to sweep the sub-continent, charged by a bull elephant and enchanted by Ju/’hoansi story-telling around a campfire. Salt & Honey is her first novel.
Shortlisted for the Spread the Word : Books to Talk About 2008.A highly evocative story about the injustices that took place under the apartheid regime in South Africa. A young girl, Koba, witnesses the murder of her family and is brought up away from her people. She faces the choice of staying with the people who have grown to love her, and facing exile from her people, or returning to her tribal roots. A fascinating debut.
