Hari Budha Magar is a Nepalese double above-knee amputee and record-breaking mountaineer. Born at an altitude of 2,500m in a remote part of Western Nepal, Hari always dreamed of climbing Mount Everest.
Growing up surrounded by the Nepalese civil war, he joined the British Army via the elite Royal Gurkha Rifles at the first opportunity. He served for more than 15 years as a combat medic, sniper and covert surveillance operator before stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan in 2010, cutting his career short due to the injuries sustained in the blast. He was medically discharged from the rank of Corporal four years later, in 2014.
In 2017, he became the first double above-knee amputee to summit a mountain taller than 6,000m (Mera Peak, Nepal, 6,476m). The Seven Summits included Mt. Blanc, Europe (4,810m), Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa (5,895m), Mt. Everest, Asia (8,849m), Denali, North America (6,190m), Aconcagua, South America (6,961m), Puncak Jaya, Oceania (4,884m) and Mt Vinson.
