When you pick up this author you know you are in safe hands, she never seems to let you down. Her insight into families and how they function pulls at the heartstrings or leaves you nodding in agreement. She is a delight. This is about sibling rivalry, about three grown children with a lot of learning to do and a lot more growing up to do too. It’s a great read. A gritty, hard-hitting, engrossing novel of two brothers and their perfect ‘surface’ lives which hide some pretty horrid habits, especially those of the younger one, an absolute bounder. I became completely absorbed in this book; a real page-turner but sophisticated, sharp and very perceptive. It’s extremely good on how alcoholics behave and their reasons for drinking. The storylines are excellent and all the characters entirely believable. A first-rate read.Similar this month: None but try Santa Montefiore.Comparison: Joanna Trollope, Libby Purves, Diana Appleyard.
