A quick overview of the Sunshine State's fascinating past. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León first set foot on Florida's east coast. The land he discovered was a geographic anomaly so distinctive that one day, centuries later, astronaut Neil Armstrong would say that Florida was the first shape on earth he recognized on his return from a visit to the moon. This unique state has witnessed such momentous events as the 1959 arrival of the first Cuban exiles under Fidel Castro and the 1981 launch of the Columbia—the first space shuttle. Join historian James C. Clark as he chronicles the surprising history of the Sunshine State in this concise and captivating book.

Saeculum: Defining Historical Eras in Ancient Roman Thought
How the notion of unique eras influenced the Roman view of time and the narration of history from various perspectives. The Victorian Era. The Age of Enlightenment. The post-9/11 years. We are accustomed to demarcating history, fencing off one period from the next. But societies have not always operated in this way. Paul Hay returns to Rome in the first century BCE to glimpse the beginnings of periodization as it is still commonly practiced, exploring how the ancient Romans developed a novel sense of time and used it to construct their views of the past and of the possibilities of the future. It was the Roman general Sulla who first sought to portray himself as the inaugurator of a new age of prosperity, and through him Romans adopted the Etruscan term saeculum to refer to a unique era of history. Romans went on to deepen their investment in periodization by linking notions of time to moments of catastrophe, allowing them to conceptualize their own epoch and its conclusion. Periodization further introduced the idea of specific agents of change into Roman thought-agents that were foundational to narratives of progress and decline. An eye-opening account, Saeculum describes nothing less than an intellectual and cognitive revolution, that fundamentally reorganized the meanings of history and time.

Paths of Power: Initialization: Book 2
Stage Two of Initialization has begun. One week since System Initialization started and over 70% of the worlds population have been slain, groups of survivors are coming together and trying to rebuild civilization. Unfortunately, with Stage Two of Initialization, this will prove to be a daunting task. More complex monsters and beasts are rising, some forming more cohesive and dangerous tribes, unlike the simple goblins and kobolds we have seen so far. Some leaders let their greed rule them, some seek to rule with an iron fist, and the precious few individuals who manage to control a settlement must struggle against not just the threats outside, but human nature and the threats from within. John and Rukia, his beloved dog, must continue their journey home through an increasingly dangerous world. He has the help of his three new companions. Magnus, the man he saved and fellow cultivator; Cody, the embodiment of what a man of faith should be; and Rowan, the Summoner and practitioner of magic. They must leave Utah and travel through Wyoming, dealing with Dungeons appearing in their path and creatures becoming more powerful, more complex and more dangerous. The party must keep up with the power curve if they are to survive.

The world of Waldyra treats its inhabitants differently. Some of them, appearing out of nowhere, suddenly receive unique achievements and quests; they become living legends and idols while basking in the limelight. And there are those who call Waldyra home. They do not play, but rather live in this colorful magic world. They do not get anything unique or legendary in return. Perhaps they are just unlucky? Or maybe they don't need the hype, and they are content with their simple existence? Or could there be something special about a peaceful and well-planned life? Who knows . . . As the old saying goes, 'Only time will tell.' At the foot of the foreboding Gray Peak lies a desolate valley. These are the backwoods of the world of Waldyra-they offer nothing valuable to players, who rarely visit as a result. Yet this is the very place where the calm and good-natured dwarf named Crow is headed. Straight after leaving the Creche, he hopes to make a living there. This hero does not crave epic battles with monsters. Quite the contrary. He wants to be a merchant and develop his blacksmithing skills, while staying far away from fighting, long voyages, and clan squabbles. But, as it often happens, if you want peace, be ready for war . . .

How tough do you need to be to withstand life's storms? What would you do, if everything that you've worked so long and hard to achieve comes crumbling down within an hour? Presumably, when this happens in life, it takes great effort to overcome despair-even if this life is virtual. For the dwarf named Crow, virtual life is no less important than reality. This is because the game holds great meaning, currently known only to the hero of the story, while the listener can only make guesses. If all efforts to build a relationship with the government are blocked by the appearance of a new captain of the guard, who cannot stand players; if the previously deserted and lifeless plain by Gray Peak is suddenly invaded by hordes of orcs; if the weather has gotten so bad that it's time to stop thinking of growing a business or building a homestead, and to focus on simply surviving instead, then the only thing left is to grit your teeth and continue to move towards your goal, while calmly and logically solving any encountered problems. The story of the dwarf named Crow continues, while his secret has yet to be uncovered. Despite this, there is no shortage of adventures in his life.
