"Grant Allen (1848–1899) var en kanadisk vitenskaps-journalist fra Wolfe Island rett nord for Toronto, som emigrerte til England i tiden rundt den amerikanske borgerkrigen. Kaptein Munk er forfatternavnet til Olaf Wilhelm Erichsen (1870-1946). I sin storhetstid var han en av Norges mest populære underholdningsforfattere, ved siden av Stein Riverton og Øvre Richter Frich. Riverton ble kjent for sine krimhistorier og Øvre Richter Frich for sine action-spekkede thrillere om den blonde kjempen Jonas Fjeld. Disse tre var de mest kjente sjangerforfatterne i mellomkrigstiden.
Kaptein Munk bygget seg dessverre opp en del politiske bagasje som gjorde at hans store salgstall i denne perioden har blitt fortrengt. Han støttet likevel ikke nazistenes invasjon, og trakk seg tilbake under krigen. De fleste av hans synspunkter var delt i mer eller mindre grad av de andre to store populærforfatterne, Riverton og Frich. Og de var desseverre også typiske for forfattere av populærlitteratur i utlandet, som f.eks H.P. Lovecraft og Robert E. Howard.
Vi kan ikke gjøre noe med verden slik den en gang var. Vi kan bare opplyse oss selv, slik at vi ikke gjentar den uretten som en gang ble begått.
Men dette er likevel en underholdende fortelling men en god del sjarm. Det er ikke en politisk pamflett. På 1920-tallet var Kaptein Munk Norges viktigste formidler av science fiction.
