Accountability after Economic Crisis: Retribution, Truth, or Acknowledgment?
"Accountability after Economic Crisis reconstructs the captivating story of how different nations responded to the 2008 economic crisis, one of the most challenging economic downturns in modern history. Why did some countries look for explanations of the economic failure and seek to hold those responsible to account, while others looked the other way? If so, were certain methods more effective than others? Is there, in fact, a best way? Iosif Kovras introduces an innovative framework to explain the varied political responses to an economic crisis, pushing the boundaries of traditional analysis by drawing on political economy, comparative politics, public administration, economic history, criminal law, and criminology. He identifies three distinct accountability mechanisms used by leaders: retribution—prosecuting those at fault; truth recovery—establishing commissions of inquiry to reveal the facts; official acknowledgment—issuing formal apologies. Zeroing in on each country in turn, he shows how these mechanisms were employed and with what effect. Featuring original observations from a survey in Iceland and experimental data from a conjoint experiment, Accountability after Economic Crisis provides a thorough and engaging examination of how countries manage accountability in the wake of an economic crisis."

Horace: Poet on a Volcano (Ancient Lives)
"A biography of Horace, one of the most popular poets from antiquity, revealing the little-known man behind his famous lines Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65–8 BCE) wrote some of ancient Rome's greatest poetry, melding languages and cultures with youthful ideals and a realist's recognition of the dictatorial world around him. Horace is famed for his fine phrases, lyric sex, and guidance on how to live, but he was a poet maddened by war, and many of his most self-revealing poems have rarely been read. He could be sublime and obscene, amusing and abusive, a model of moderation and anything but. In this book, the first modern retelling of Horace's life, Peter Stothard follows the poet from his birth as the son of a formerly enslaved father through his rise to the highest circles of Roman society. He shines a light on how shattering experiences in the war to save Rome's republic shaped the loyal servant and revolutionary artist he became. With astute scholarship and sympathy, Stothard follows Horace's rise from humble beginnings to the social and political heights of the autocracy he had fought to prevent."

Marcel Proust: A Very Short Introduction
"100 years after Proust's death, In Search of Lost Time remains one of the greatest works in World Literature. At 3,000 pages, it can be intimidating to some. This short volume invites first-time readers and veterans alike to view the novel in a new way. Marcel Proust (1871-1922) was arguably France's best-known literary writer. He was the author of stories, essays, translations, and a 3,000-page novel, In Search of Lost Time (1913-27). This book is a brief guide to Proust's magnum opus. Joshua Landy shows why the questions Proust raises are important and exciting for all of us: how we can feel at home in the world; how we can find genuine connection with other human beings; how we can find enchantment in a world without God; how art can transform our lives; whether an artist's life can shed light on their work; what we can know about the world, other people, and ourselves; when not knowing is better than knowing; how sexual orientation affects questions of connection and identity; who we are, deep down; what memory tells us about our inner world; why it might be good to think of our life as a story; how we can feel like a single, unified person when we are torn apart by change and competing desires. Finally, Landy suggests why it's worthwhile to read the novel itself."

Joseph's Bones: Understanding the Struggle Between God and Mankind in the Bible
"A bold and radical reinterpretation of the Old Testament. 'Brilliant...Nothing quite like it has appeared in years.' (Jack Miles, author of A Biography ) Imagine if someone who had never heard of Judaism or Christianity read the Old Testament. How could the relationship between God and humanity possibly be understood? In Joseph's Bones , Segal approaches the Bible from this fresh perspective-one framed by the story of the Israelites' fidelity to Joseph-and finds something an account of the human condition that reads like an existential novel about the struggle of mankind against the unpredictable and often unwarranted wrath of God. This is a rarity in Biblical interpretation- brilliant and rigorously argued, 'a work of stunning originality.'"

Graceful Simplicity: The Foundations of Bread and Roses Socialism
"Graceful Simplicity: The Foundations of Bread and Roses Socialism is a new audiobook prepared with an eye on the 2024 Presidential elections. The author, Jerome Segal, is challenging Joe Biden for the nomination of the Democratic Party. The audiobook is primarily the first audio of Dr. Segal’s seminal 1999 book, Graceful Simplicity: The Philosophy and Politics of Simple Living. The original book made two main contributions to the literature on simple living. First, it argued that beauty and creative expression should be counted among our basic needs, and their fulfillment part of what simple living aspires to. Secondly, it argued that simple living should be thought of as more than a life-style choice. Rather, it should animate a new politics, one which places making the option of simple living relevant to people at all parts of the income spectrum, the central goal of socio-economic policy. Concretely, this means making it possible for people on a minimum wage to meet their core needs (including beauty) on 4 or even 3 days of Job System work per week. Starting when he first ran for public office in 2018, Dr. Segal went from writing about the need for a politics of simplicity to actually pursuing one. Over time he came to use the term “Bread and Roses socialism” to characterize his political program, and came to call himself, a bread and roses socialist. The new audiobook opens with a 25 page preface that explains the transition from “graceful simplicity” to “bread and roses socialism” as well as the conceptual linkage between the two concepts. Graceful Simplicity (1999) was a Book of the Month Club selection, and was translated into Danish and Chinese."
