The Russo-Japanese War: Dawn of Modern Warfare
"This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. The Russo-Japanese War, fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan from 1904 to 1905, was the first major conflict of the 20th century that revealed the rapid changes in military technology and tactics. The roots of the war lay in the competing imperial ambitions of the two nations in East Asia, specifically over control of Korea and Manchuria. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Russia and Japan were expanding their influence in the region. Russia, driven by its desire to secure a warm-water port and expand its empire in the Far East, had been pushing southward into Manchuria and Korea. At the same time, Japan, a rising power in Asia, sought to maintain its dominance over Korea and expand its influence in Manchuria. These territorial ambitions created tensions between the two powers, which escalated after the Russo-Japanese negotiations failed in 1903. Japan, having already experienced rapid modernization and military growth, viewed Russia’s increasing presence in the region as a threat to its own interests. A significant contributing factor to the war was the strategic importance of Korea. Japan had long considered Korea its sphere of influence, and in the late 19th century, it had fought the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), which resulted in Japan gaining control over Taiwan and establishing its dominance in Korea. Russia, on the other hand, viewed Korea as part of its broader imperial aspirations and sought to secure a foothold in the Korean Peninsula. With both countries vying for control of Korea and Manchuria, their competition became a powder keg waiting to explode."

90 Seconds to Midnight: A Hiroshima Survivor's Nuclear Odyssey
"This is the story of Setsuko Nakamura Thurlow—a teenage girl living in Hiroshima in 1945, when the city was annihilated by an atomic bomb. Struggling with grief and anger, Thurlow set out to warn the world about the horrors of a nuclear attack in a crusade that has lasted decades. In 2015 Thurlow sparked a rallying cry for activists when she proclaimed at the United Nations, 'Humanity and nuclear weapons cannot coexist.' With that, she shifted the global discussion from nuclear deterrence to humanitarian consequences, the key in crafting the landmark Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Regarded as the conscience of the antinuclear movement, Thurlow accepted the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. In 2021, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons went into effect, banning nuclear weapons under international law. Critical historical events need a personal narrative, and Thurlow is such a storyteller for Hiroshima. 90 Seconds to Midnight recounts Thurlow's ascent from the netherworld where she saw, heard, and smelled death and her relentless efforts to protect the world from an unspeakable fate. Knowing she would have to live with those nightmares, Thurlow turned them into a force to impel people to learn from Hiroshima, to admit that yes, it could happen again—and then to take action."

The Tiananmen Square Massacre: China's Crackdown
"This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. The Tiananmen Square Massacre, one of the most significant events in modern Chinese history, was not a spontaneous eruption of violence, but rather the culmination of years of political, economic, and social pressures that had been building within the country. The roots of the protests trace back to a combination of rising discontent over economic reforms, increasing corruption within the Communist Party, and a growing desire for greater political freedoms. While the Tiananmen Square protests are often remembered for the tragic and brutal crackdown, it is important to understand the context that led up to the moment of violence. In the early 1980s, China was undergoing significant changes. Under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, the country began to shift away from the rigid, centrally-planned economy of the past toward a more market-oriented model. This shift, known as 'Reform and Opening,' led to rapid economic growth but also deepened the inequalities within Chinese society. The urban working class, farmers, and intellectuals, especially the youth, began to feel the effects of inflation, corruption, and growing unemployment. Many felt that the promises of a more prosperous and equal society had not been fully realized, and that those in power were benefitting disproportionately from the country's economic boom. At the same time, the political environment was becoming more open to reform. The death of Hu Yaobang, a former General Secretary of the Communist Party, in April 1989 served as a catalyst for the protests. Hu was seen by many as a champion of reform, particularly among students and intellectuals, who admired his calls for greater political freedom and anti-corruption measures. His death, viewed by many as a result of the government's failure to address the issues he championed, led to an outpouring of grief and outrage. Thousands of students gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to mourn Hu and demand political reforms."

The Untold Magellan Story Second Edition
"The Untold Magellan Story: Second Edition is not a work of fiction—it's a gripping journey through real history. In a bold and imaginative narrative, acclaimed historian Charles Avila brings the legendary Ferdinand Magellan across the Great Divide to speak directly to you, offering personal insights into his life, unprecedented achievements, and hard-earned reflections from five centuries past. Through Avila’s masterful storytelling, Magellan recounts the epic voyage that changed the world: the first circumnavigation of the globe, the discovery of the strait that bears his name, his awe at the Magellanic Clouds, his regret over the naming of an island, and his unintended role in the birth of a nation. This second edition goes further, revisiting the colonial legacy left in the wake of European expansion. In a striking historical turn, even Pope Francis—before his passing—challenged the long-held doctrine of the “right of discovery,” a decree once issued by Pope Alexander VI. Was Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines a heroic feat or an immoral act of imperialism? With fresh insights and provocative questions, this book invites you to rethink history through the eyes of the man who helped shape it. Read the story. Or better yet—listen as Magellan tells it himself."

Pearl and Bessie: A baby abandoned on a rubbish dump, and the woman who saved her
"On the rubbish dump, a baby cried. The cry was weak, and fading. The wild dogs had picked up the cries, and the scent, and were circling, closing in. Bessie walked towards the sound and found a day-old baby girl. She had been abandoned because of her sex. It happened often here, in south west China. If Bessie did nothing, the baby would be torn to pieces. So she picked her up, carried her to safety, and later adopted her. Yet, in saving her life, did Bessie condemn the baby she named Pearl to a life of fear and persecution? This is Pearl’s story, and that of Bessie, plus Alf – Bessie’s then fiancé, later husband – and John, a second Han Chinese child the couple adopted. Bessie and Alf were Methodists missionaries in Yunnan province, China, in the first half of the twentieth century. They lived through momentous times, including the Japanese occupation, the Second World War, the civil war, the Communist takeover and the Cultural Revolution. This book follows their personal stories against the backdrop of a turbulent century."

Allied POWs in Japan: Survival and Resistance
"This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. The steel doors of the cattle car slammed shut with a finality that echoed through the souls of the exhausted Allied prisoners within. For months, they had endured the horrors of capture, forced marches, overcrowded transport ships, and the gradual realization that they were bound for the Japanese home islands—a destination that filled even the most optimistic among them with dread. As the train lurched forward through the Japanese countryside in 1942, these men could not have imagined the depths of suffering they would endure, nor the extraordinary reserves of courage, ingenuity, and solidarity they would discover within themselves over the next three years. The story of Allied prisoners of war in Japan during World War II represents one of the most harrowing chapters in the annals of human endurance. Between 1942 and 1945, approximately 36,000 Allied servicemen—primarily American, British, Australian, and Dutch—found themselves imprisoned in a network of camps scattered across the Japanese archipelago. These men, captured during the early Japanese victories at Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Hong Kong, and Singapore, faced conditions so severe that nearly 40% would not survive to see liberation. Yet within this tale of systematic brutality and dehumanization lies another story—one of remarkable human resilience, creative resistance, and the unbreakable bonds forged between men reduced to their most elemental struggle for survival. The Allied prisoners in Japan did not merely endure their captivity; they fought back through acts of sabotage, the preservation of military discipline, the creation of hidden communication networks, and the maintenance of hope even in the darkest circumstances."
