"Brought to you by Penguin. What are the forces that shape us? In The Women, Hilton Als explores—with breath taking originality—the role of sexual and racial identity in marginalized lives. With a blend of fact and fiction, Als brings to vivid life a number of extraordinary characters, including: his mother, a singular woman whose West Indian heritage and determination inspired her son to write; Malcolm X's mother, whose mixed-race background and eventual descent into madness contributed to her son's burgeoning misogyny and fear; brilliant, Harvard-educated Dorothy Dean, who deeply empathized with white gay men; and Owen Dodson, teacher and poet, who played an important role in the author's development as a gay man, and thinker. Combining memoir, cultural history, social theory and storytelling, The Women is a profoundly innovative work which has inspired a generation of writers. Here, Als submits both racial and sexual stereotypes to scrutiny, showing ‘no mercy but every tenderness’. The results are exhilarating. The Women is that rarest of books: a memorable work of self-investigation that creates a form of all its own. © Hilton Als 2025 (P) Penguin Audio 2025"

Political Girl: Life and Fate in Russia
"Brought to you by Penguin. What do you do when your country becomes a repressive authoritarian state? 2014: Russia prepares to host the Winter Olympics. Russia invades Crimea. Putin is re-elected president. Several political prisoners are amnestied and released early from prison. Maria Alyokhina is among them. She had spent two years in a penal colony after performing the punk prayer ‘Virgin Mary, Banish Putin’ with her friends in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. They had warned the rest of the world of the dangers of authoritarianism, but the Russia she finds when she gets out of prison is even more oppressive. What can you do, she asks, when your country has been seized by all-powerful men who are waging war against another country and their own citizens? As Maria recounts her brave and colourful protests, we are drawn straight into the world of grassroots opposition and witness the absurd measures the Russian state takes to contain protest. And when the full-scale war against Ukraine starts and the Russian opposition is repeatedly silenced, Maria and her activist friends continue to resist despite the high stakes. They fight increasingly absurd cycles of detention and house arrest: sometimes with the smallest acts such as going for a walk or having a rainbow ice cream, until, faced with a new prison sentence, she escapes Russia in May 2022 dressed as a food delivery courier. Her story, like her life, is fiercely courageous, darkly funny and highly inspiring to anyone who wants to stand up for the truth. © Maria Alyokhina 2025 (P) Penguin Audio 2025"

"Aged 12, Sam Walker Roberts was groomed online by a teacher who later sexually assaulted and raped her. Weeks later, she fell into the clutches of a paedophile ring and was raped repeatedly by a gang, only one of whom faced justice. Devastated at the failures in the judicial system, Sam launched: ‘You have not defeated me’, a campaign which demanded more support and understanding for grooming victims. In 2012, Sam worked with Keith Vaz on a government inquiry into localised grooming. In 2014, she returned to the street where she was gang-raped and interviewed local residents, gathering evidence that other children had been exploited at the same address. Working with MP’s, she set up fake profiles online, showing how easily children are targeted. She snared two paedophiles who were later jailed. In 2019, Sam wrote an open letter: ‘Message to a Monster’ and launched an e petition calling for the notion of ostensible consent to be abolished in child sex cases. Three years later, Sam headed a panel of 11 victims at the Oldham CSE inquiry. Her complaints against police and council were upheld and she received apologies. She has since been pushing Oldham council to hold a broad review which she hopes will lead to the introduction of new safety measures for all children. She recently learned she has been successful, and the inquiry will now go ahead. Sam has battled back from unimaginable tragedy, including the death of her husband, to fight for change. She has found peace converting to Islam and is determined to remove race labels from the grooming debate. Sam says: “I can’t change what’s happened to me. But I can speak out to try and make sure all children are aware of grooming and how to stop it. We have to educate and protect our children, so that child sex exploitation becomes a thing of the past.”"

"Bestselling author, NYU professor, and cohost of the Pivot podcast, Scott Galloway offers a path forward for men and parents of boys. Boys and men are in crisis. Rarely has a cohort fallen further and faster than young men living in Western democracies. Boys are less likely to graduate from high school or college than girls. One in seven men reports having no friends, and men account for three of every four deaths of despair in America. Even worse, the lack of attention to these problems has created a void filled by voices espousing misogyny, the demonization of others, and a toxic vision of masculinity. But this is not just a male issue: women and children can't flourish if men aren't doing well. As we know from spasms of violence, there is nothing more dangerous than a lonely, broke young man. Scott Galloway has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years. In Notes on Being a Man, Galloway explores what it means to be a man in modern America. He promotes the importance of healthy masculinity and mental strength. He shares his own story from boyhood to manhood. He explores his parent's difficult divorce, working through his anger and depression issues, trying to make money, and raising two boys. He shares the sometimes funny, often painful, lessons he learned along the way. Some of these lessons include: - Being a good dad means being good to their mother. - Action absorbs anxiety. - Find what you're good at-follow your talent. - Get out of the house. - Take risk and be willing to feel like an imposter. This is a key to professional success-and masculinity. - Acknowledge your blessings-and create opportunities for others. Be of surplus value. - Be kind. That's the secret to success in relationships. With unflinching honesty, Scott Galloway maps out an enriching, inspiring operator's manual for being a man today."

The Smiling Land: All Around the Circle in My Newfoundland and Labrador
"From one of Canada's most beloved and celebrated Newfoundlanders comes a rollicking insider's guide to the province, told as only Alan Doyle can tell it. Few Canadian musicians are as synonymous with their home province as Alan Doyle is to his-and even fewer once worked as tour guides. In The Smiling Land, Alan reprises his tour-guiding role to welcome the rest of Canada to his home and take readers on an adventure: a freewheeling road trip through Newfoundland, its history, and its culture. From Fogo Island to the Southwest Coast, Labrador to Ferryland, and everywhere in between, Alan's Newfoundland awaits you. There are visits to windswept coastlines and towering crags, ancient Viking and Basque fishing settlements, and more lighthouses than you can shake a foghorn at. More recent settlements are also part of the itinerary, from burgeoning arts venues and communities to more humble but no less world-class locales, such as Foley's Shed, a jaunty live-music pub that-as its name suggests-happens to be in some guy named Foley's shed. Alan provides savvy insider tips for visitors to St. John's, like how to score fish and chips and a free ride by hopping into the delivery person's car as they drive your food to your desired destination. Or, for the aspiring rum smuggler visiting the Burin Peninsula, how to sneak bottles from the French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to the shores of Newfoundland. There are dolphin sightings, cliffside hikes among flocks of ocean-plunging puffins, and a pilgrimage to the home of the (late) great auk. And what tour of Newfoundland could be complete without a short history of what can best be described as 'icebergs that look like things,' an illustrious history that includes an exact replica of the Virgin Mary that once washed into St. John's harbour, and the more recent-and far less holy-'Dickie Berg,' which made international headlines for looking like . . . well, not the Virgin Mary. Wildly entertaining, informative, and brimming with Alan's classic brand of storytelling and romping good fun, The Smiling Land is a celebration of Newfoundland-both its storied past and its ever-vibrant present."

Simply More: A book for anyone who has been told they're too much
"Read by the author, Cynthia Erivo. It is never too late to build the life you're seeking. Cynthia Erivo learned the music to Wicked a decade before she needed it, not knowing that those same lyrics would change her life. Ten years later, she performed those songs on a world stage, showing us that there is always time to keep discovering ourselves, and that the journey of becoming is not a finite one. In Simply More, through a series of powerful, personal vignettes, Cynthia reflects on the ways that she has grown as an actor and a person, shares the lessons she's learned over years of performing, and reminds us how we are capable of so much more than we think. In this profoundly honest and moving memoir, Cynthia draws from her experiences running marathons, both real and metaphorical, on stage and on screen, to show how each challenge can help us. Through personal anecdotes, lessons and advice, she urges readers to lean into the wisdom of their bodies and to understand and strive for a physical and mental balance. Because when we chase our deepest desires, each small step leads us closer to where we want to go. Part-memoir, part-inspirational manual for better living, Simply More is for anyone seeking greater harmony and fulfilment in their lives."

"On October 22, 2014, Claire Throssell’s life changed forever after her ex-husband lured their two children, Jack, 12, and his nine-year-old brother, Paul, to the attic of their family home, before deliberately setting fire to the house, murdering his children and killing himself. Claire had been subject to her husband’s cruel coercive, physical, emotional and financial abuse throughout their 16-year marriage. After she found the strength to leave her husband, his campaign of brutality didn’t end, but the courts ignored her, and their sons’ wishes. They gave him unsupervised access to their two sons, despite Claire’s concerns that he was very capable of harming them. Her worst fears came true. Since 2016, Throssell has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid and IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Service). Determined to ensure the voices of children never go unheard again, she has played a fundamental role in the implementation of the Domestic Abuse Bill, as well as ensuring survivors of domestic abuse can no longer be cross-examined by their perpetrators in the Family Court. Claire also played a significant role in pushing for all judges to be trained on the subject of domestic abuse and has spearheaded the Child First campaign, lobbying parliament to abolish the ‘presumption of contact’ guidelines in child custody cases. For My Boys is Claire’s heartbreaking story and her tale of determination to seek justice for her sons and give a voice to all children who are at risk at the hands of an abusive parent. Her battle with government and court bureaucracy will anger and shock, but Claire’s humbling and remarkable story of strength will inspire."

Barn Gothic: Three Generations and the Death of the Family Dairy Farm
"When Ryan Dennis’s father was crushed by heavy machinery on their New York dairy farm, both men accepted the accident as a risk of agricultural life. But it was harder to comprehend being crushed by low milk prices, big banks, and the policies that destroyed America’s family farms. Even though Ryan grew up watching his father and grandfather struggle to survive, he always thought he would follow in their footsteps and take over the family farm. But as he milked cows and fed calves, the world outside the barn was changing. Between 2003 and 2020, 40,000 dairy farms went out of business in the United States.Barn Gothic is an elegy for family farmers and an intimate portrait of three generations laboring to be fathers and sons while their livelihood falls apart.
