Mary Ruth Steinman ist ein Magnet für Kontroversen, aber sie ist gut fürs Geschäft. Zumindest bis meine chronisch schlecht gelaunte Perserkatze Poppy versucht, sie während einer Lesung zu beißen. Ich bin Dakota Adair, stolze Besitzerin von Tattered Pages, einer Buchhandlung für außergewöhnliche und skurrile Bücher. Nebenbei löse ich auch gelegentlich Mordfälle. Rein hobbymäßig. Meistens.
Nach einem Vortrag über seltene Bücher sprudle ich nur so vor Ideen, wie ich meinen Laden erweitern könnte. Doch als die Vortragende kurz darauf tot aufgefunden wird, finde ich mich schneller in einem neuen Fall wieder, als ich „Kriminalroman“ sagen kann. Der charmante – und leider ziemlich misstrauische – Detektiv, ist auch noch davon überzeugt, dass ich mehr weiß, als ich zugebe. Aber natürlich bin ich viel zu sehr damit beschäftigt, einen Laden zu führen und mich um meine mürrische Perserkatze zu kümmern, als jemanden zu ermorden, aber niemand glaubt mir. Das bedeutet: Bücher beiseitelegen und Ermittlerhut aufsetzen. Ich muss den Mörder finden!
Blöd nur, dass der Fall ausgerechnet mit Cole zu tun hat – dem charmanten Reporter mit einer Vorliebe für Skandale und Geheimnisse. Und obwohl er nicht begeistert ist, dass ihm jemand seine große Story gestohlen hat, kann er doch unmöglich der Täter sein.
