Game of Shadows and Secrets - Part 1
"The web pages flashed under Ajax’s eyelids. The BRG World Tournament was this week. The quarterfinals for duos in Starcraft were during his shift and he was taking peeks. Back in the 2040s, eSports had more viewers than football. Now, over twenty years later, the BRG World Tournament was huge. People were guessing that it might have more viewers than the Olympic games would in a few months. Ajax opened his eyes to check his counter. He was at the help desk in the back by the doors and windows. His checkered blue and orange apron sported the paint splattered name Lowes-Depot. Retail was almost dead, but hardware and home improvement materials were too heavy to mail via drone and all the contractors liked to come pick things out in person. Even then, by how unvisited Ajax had been this shift, he was surprised the store was still in business. Closing his eyes, he went back to the viewing screens of his iLids. The commentator was going back and forth between the Korean team, two skinny guys with edgy haircuts that Ajax could never pull off, and the American team, StarCrasher and MissyQ. Ajax had seen StarCrasher. He was one of the top players in the US and without a doubt should have been there. However, MissyQ was more known for MMOs; she felt more like a stunt piece to draw attention. Not that he would ever voice anything against MissyQ. She was the number one Gamer Girl and she had so many fanboys out there. Ajax was sure one would hear him and rally a horde of her adoring fans to oust him. He had spent more time than he truly cared to admit watching her videos. She was pretty good, and if he wanted to watch someone’s stream, why not hers? Attractive was an understatement when it came to MissyQ."

Game of Shadows and Secrets - Part 2
"Ajax cleaned the dishes he’d left out in his hasty scramble back to the PIU, his Personal Immersion Unit, yesterday. He was still struggling with his sense of time. He, Missy, and Sky had spent an entire week in Legendary Rule, despite only a day passing outside it. They had been doing well in the game, at least until Richard had shown up. The image of Richard’s smug face as he stood atop the city walls made Ajax squeeze the dish rag hard enough to squirt himself in the face. He reached for a dish towel next to the fridge, noticing a dent. Had that always been there? It was driving him crazy; he hadn’t been able to cast another Arcane Bullet. A ping came across his iLids, displaying a message from Sarah directly into his eyes. She wanted him and Reinhart to come over for dinner. He sent back that he was happy to come over. In truth, he was starting to feel like he needed a break from Legendary Rule. He’d been through a wild game experience during the week they’d spent inside. Most games did not feel so real, so they weren’t as emotionally taxing. But after the multi-day escort and Missy’s kidnapping, Ajax could really use a sense of normalcy. The reality of the game wasn’t all bad. After rescuing Missy, he had grown even closer to her, developing a relationship he had never experienced in the real world. Unfortunately, while he was saving Missy, the caravan they were escorting was wiped out. They had chosen to loot the wreckage to make the most of it. A part of him regretted it, but they had been petty assholes, so Ajax tried not to stew on it. He had regretted the looting a bit more when he, Missy, and Sky had reached Tyren, the human capital, and were arrested and jailed upon entry. That had been enough to make him take a break from the game; a challenge for another time. Ping."

Game of Shadows and Secrets - Part 3
"Ajax looted the orc. He'd been farming the ugly green skins for longer than he'd like to admit. 'Oh joy. Another tusk to sell.' Ajax watched as an eighth stack of one hundred started in his inventory. He, Sky, MissyQ, Adriana, and Daphne had escaped Tyren with a literal castle full of loot two days ago. Ajax didn't feel one bit guilty about all they’d taken; the royal family had imploded with no small amount of help from Richard. With his criminal status removed once they had completed the dungeon, they had wasted no time in leaving Tyren and the mess it had become behind them. The forums painted the city as pure chaos. The royal family was all assumed dead, leaving dukes springing up like weeds, offering players nearly endless quests to kill rivals or campaign for them. More than a few disgruntled players were posting on the forums asking what to do now that a particular noble who'd given them a quest was dead. There was no respawning for the NPCs. When the forums weren’t discussing the quests, they were filled with rumors of how the royal family had died. The current running theory was that there was a battle between demons and angels, and there was a game-wide manhunt for any perpetrators who escaped. Richard had pinned that squarely on Ajax’s back. Ajax tried to ignore the constant chatter on the forums, working to focus on his own issues. Their group of five had spent their time since leaving Tyren working to level up as quickly as they could as they prepared for the upcoming convention. Ajax was so close to joining a professional team; he wasn’t about to let up on the work now. They’d been training and hunting together, but at the moment, Ajax was alone. The girls had logged off for the day to prepare for the convention in the real world. 'System, how much longer do I have before I need to go?'"
