"This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. David has no greater wish than to explore the mountains behind his new home in North Carolina and as he does he finds a wonder never dreamed of, the Phoenix. The Phoenix introduces David to an endless list of his friends from mythology and in the process opens David's eyes to the wide world both the unseen world and seen world. In the unseen world David and the Phoenix share many adventures all the while a scientist is trying to capture the Phoenix to prove to the world that the bird is real. The phoenix takes David on 'educational field trips' to meet sea monsters, fauns and other creatures. Plus they hatch a hysterical plot to scare off an over eager scientist from the phoenix's trail. David learns some valuable lessons about life, one is that nothing remains the same as one grows up. The other is... well perhaps you should read the book yourself and find your own lessons within the pages. A well written story, 'David and the Phoenix' has no particular time setting so that it could very well be placed in current time. It brings back to me memories of times when life was much simpler, more pleasant and without the problems we as adults face. It's a story of childhood and the dreams that children of every age share and which we all to soon leave behind. Of course, there is the traditional fiery death of the phoenix in the story."

"David and the Phoenix is a heartwarming mid-century children’s fantasy about discovery, courage, and the magic that hides in the world around us. When young David moves to a new home at the edge of a towering mountain, his imagination sparks with curiosity. But nothing prepares him for what awaits at the summit — a majestic, wise, and slightly eccentric Phoenix studying Spanish verbs and living in secret high above the world. What begins as a chance encounter turns into an unforgettable friendship. The Phoenix takes David under its fiery wing, revealing wonders, strange creatures, and lessons that reshape the way he sees the world. Together, they embark on whimsical adventures that blend humor, enchantment, and genuine heart. Edward Ormondroyd’s classic tale has delighted generations of readers with its gentle wit and timeless spirit. Narrated by Jason Mann, this audiobook captures every spark of wonder, every flutter of magic, and every moment of friendship between a boy and one of mythology’s most beloved creatures. A charming journey for families, young listeners, and anyone who remembers the thrill of discovering magic for the first time."

"David knew that one should be prepared for anything when one climbs a mountain, but he never dreamed what he would find that June morning on the mountain ledge. There stood an enormous bird, with a head like an eagle, a neck like a swan, and a scarlet crest. The most astonishing thing was that the bird had an open book on the ground and was reading from it! This was David's first sight of the fabulous Phoenix and the beginning of a pleasant and profitable partnership. The Phoenix found a great deal lacking in David's education -- he flunked questions like "How do you tell a true from a false Unicorn?" -- and undertook to supplement it with a practical education, an education that would be a preparation for Life. The education had to be combined with offensive and defensive measures against a Scientist who was bent on capturing the Phoenix, but the two projects together involved exciting and hilarious adventures for boy and bird. A wonderful read-aloud book, adventurous and very funny, with much of the magic as well as the humor of the fantastic. (Summary from the front flap of the dust jacket.)"

"When David finally has a chance to climb the mountain behind his new home he has no idea he is about to meet a fabulous mythical creature. Even if he had known, who could have guessed that a Phoenix would turn out to be so stuffy, so pompous-and so utterly endearing? (To say nothing of its fondness for Aunt Amy's sugar cookies!) When the Phoenix decides to take a hand in David's education the adventures-and the hilarity-really begin. Alas, the wonderful visits to gryffons, sea monsters, and banshees will come to a crashing halt if the scientist stalking the Phoenix is successful... A tale filled with high humor and deep humanity, this much beloved classic springs to new life in a full cast recording that features the author himself as narrator."
