Peter Crawshaw from Lovereading.co.uk talk about what great about eBooks

Many of us have been book lovers since before we can remember. Our relationship with reading is a strong one, one that over the years only seems to get stronger. Like any relationship, things change and often for the better! The most recent shift in my love affair with reading is the coming of age of eBook readers.

Now, I love my paperbacks. I enjoy the smell, the feel, and the routine of flicking through page after page. I even like it when the glue melts and the pages fall out on holiday! However my new toy, although not purchased to replace my much-loved books, has added a great deal to my favourite pastime. Admittedly, a few years ago I was skeptical about the electronic alternative, as you can see from the piece I did for the BBC back in 2008 (link to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7613392.stm) but then I had an epiphany (of sorts). I realised ultimately, I am a lover of reading, not books. Therefore there are plenty of reasons to love eBooks too. If you haven’t considered eBooks before, then have a read of the things that I think digital readers are good for.

Firstly, the accessibility it gives me is unbeatable. No bookstore in the world can compete with the Internet. With a digital reader, you have instant access to an enormous range of literature. This also eliminates any time between reads. Another bonus, which I did not expect, is the research you are able to do on them. I am able to hunt for books, read reviews and find out the next item in a series, all on a single page (well you can on Lovereading.co.uk). I also love the fact that PDF extracts of books can be downloaded and read on my eReader so I can see if I like the book enough to buy it.

Another great feature of eReaders is the level of privacy they give you. I must admit, after a long day at work, sitting on the tube, I sometimes prefer not to engage in the most literary works. Reading on a Kindle or the like, eliminates any embarrassment you might feel about your reading material.

Finally, the portability of an eReader is a saving grace, for my back if nothing else. I love the fact that I always have a book with me. Now if my train is delayed or my lunch date’s running late, I always have a book with me and best off all, if I finish it, I always have a back up – or with wifi connections get one pretty quickly!

I am not trying to say eBooks are better than print books. Nor am I really trying to compare them to one another at all. I discovered that a love of reading is not the same as a love of books. You can love them both! If it’s reading you enjoy then eBooks might just be for you. Find out more at Lovereading’s special eBook section where you can get all the most popular formats, Kindle, iBooks, ePub and Google eBooks.

This thoroughly researched and rounded account of their story relates their experiences of the camps and through the personal stories – often recounted for the first time - learn what impact these events had on their lives as children and as adults. Their experiences are very mixed, some suffered through terrible deprivations under despotic camp guards others were “luckier” to be interned under less strict rulers, a few luckier still were young enough and resilient enough to see it all as a terrific adventure. With so many disparate strands, it would be easy to lose focus but Nicola Tyrer has a strong hand on the narrative , honouring the people who told her their stories.Like for Like ReadingHow the Girl Guides Won the War, Janie HamptonEmpire of the Sun, J G Ballard" href="http://www.lovereading.co.uk/book/7356/Stolen-Childhoods-The-Untold-Story-of-the-Children-Interned-by-the-Japanese-in-the-Second-World-War-by-Nicola-Tyrer.html">

Exciting New Young Adult Fiction

Publishers are really going to town at the moment on releasing teen and YA fiction but how can you pick what’s best? We’re here to help you do just that so we’ve selected our favourites – for your eyes only. You’ll find them all in our ‘newgen’ category. It was, of course, the Twilight books that really kick-started this genre but it has quickly developed (like teenagers) to cover a wide range of compelling storytelling, some of supernatural and some not. Our teen bookshelf below is teeming with great reads. Also don’t forget to check out our Dystopian Fiction category for even more choice.

Celebrated writers as Simon Armitage, Gillian Clarke, Wendy Cope, Geoffrey Hill, Jackie Kay, Michael Longley, Andrew Motion, Don Paterson, and Jo Shapcott, alongside some of the newest young talent around - address a moment or event from their chosen year, be it of personal or political significance or both. Through a series of specially commissioned poems, Jubilee Lines offers a unique portrayal of the country and times in which we have lived since 1952, culminating in an essential portrait of today: the way we speak, the way we chronicle, the way we love and fight, and the way we honour and remember. Brilliantly introduced and edited by Carol Ann Duffy, Jubilee Lines is an unforgettable commemoration: not only a monarch's reign but of a way of living for generations of her people." href="http://www.lovereading.co.uk/book/7248/Jubilee-Lines-by-Carol-Ann-Duffy.html">

At his mother's family house in the south of France, Patrick Melrose has the run of a magical garden. Bravely imaginative and self-sufficient, five-year-old Patrick encounters the volatile lives of adults with care. His father, David, rules with considered cruelty, and Eleanor, his mother, has retreated into drink. They are expecting guests for dinner. But this afternoon is unlike the chain of summer days before, and the shocking events that precede the guests' arrival tear Patrick's world in two. Praise for the whole Melrose series of which this is the first: 'The Melrose sequence is now clearly one of the major achievements of contemporary British fiction. Stingingly well-written and exhilaratingly funny'David Sexton, Evening Standard 'St Aubyn puts an entire family under a microscope, laying bare all its painful, unavoidable complexities. Twenty-two years old and in the grip of a massive addiction, Patrick Melrose is forced to fly to New York to collect his father's ashes. Over the course of a weekend, Patrick's remorseless search for drugs on the avenues of Manhattan, haunted by old acquaintances and insistent inner voices, sends him into a nightmarish spiral. Alone in his room at the Pierre Hotel, he pushes body and mind to the very edge desperate always to stay one step ahead of his rapidly encroaching past. Praise for the whole Melrose series of which this is the second: 'The Melrose sequence is now clearly one of the major achievements of contemporary British fiction. Amid a crowd of flitting social dragonflies, he finds his search for redemption and capacity for forgiveness challenged by his observation of the cruelties around him. Armed with his biting wit and a newly fashioned openness, can Patrick, who has been to the furthest limits of experience and back again, find release from the savageries of his childhood? 'A masterpiece. Edward St Aubyn is a writer of immense gifts' Patrick McGrath 'St Aubyn's Melrose series slices and dices morality with prose so chiselled and a narrative so intense that the hairs on the back of your neck stand up' Geordie Greig, Evening Standard 'I've loved Edward St Aubyn's Patrick Melrose novels. The novel’s perspective ricochets among all members of the Melrose family – the family featured in St. Aubyn’s Melrose series that began with Never Mind – starting with Robert, who provides an exceptionally droll and compelling account of being born; to Patrick, a hilariously churlish husband who has been sexually abandoned by his wife in favour of his sons; to Mary, who’s consumed by her children and an overwhelming desire not to repeat the mistakes of her own mother. All the while, St. Aubyn examines the web of false promises that entangle this once-illustrious family whose last vestige of wealth – an old house in the south of France – is about to be donated by Patrick’s mother to a New Age foundation. An up-to-the-minute dissection of the mores of child-rearing, marriage, adultery and assisted suicide, Mother’s Milk showcases Edward St. Aubyn’s luminous and acidic prose – and his masterful ability to combine the most excruciating emotional pain with the driest comedy. Absorb Mother's Milk into your and bloodstream and postnatal depression will never seem the same again . . . Never Mind (the first Melrose) Bad News (Melrose 2) Some Hope (Melrose 3) Mother's Milk (Melrose 4) At Last (the last Melrose)" href="http://www.lovereading.co.uk/book/7343/Mother-s-Milk-by-Edward-St.-Aubyn.html"><a title="At Last by Edward St. Aubyn: April 2012 Book of the Month. The whole series have been re released with beautiful new covers and we have 4 sets you can win via a special Facebook only competition. The eagerly anticipated conclusion to the brilliant Melrose sequence from the Man Booker-shortlisted author of Mother's Milk and Some Hope now in paperback. If you want to appreciate the full brilliance of this talented author then do read the series in order as it provides one of the most powerful reflections on pain and acceptance, and the treacheries of family, ever written. She was longlisted for the Orange in 2011 and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize with her dark and witty novel that is practically impossible to pigeon-hole, A Visit from the Goon Squad.

Through Metamorphosis (1915) by Franz Kafka, Brave New World (1932) by Aldous Huxley Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) by George Orwell and on to The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) by Margaret Atwood dystopian fiction continues to probe the darker areas of the human condition.

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2011." href="http://www.lovereading.co.uk/book/6997/On-Canaan-s-Side-by-Sebastian-Barry.html">

It’s the second part of the title – “in 100 Recipes” that makes this stand out from the usual plod from hunter-gathering to yesterdays sushi craze. Instead we start with flat bread and gradually follow man’s culinary progress through “Muscules in shelle”, Trifle, Peas Soope, Brussels Sprouts, Rice Krispies treats and ending with Heston Blumenthal’s Meat Fruit. A switch-back of a journey through food good and bad, cooks wild and wily and a public palate that knows no bounds. Contained within the history is a progress through the communication of recipes, how they were first written down and how they changed and developed to encompass radio, TV, magazines and now the computer and aps. I had doubts about the format when I first started reading it but soon settled in and while it lasted A History of Food in 100 Recipes was an excellent bedtime reading treat.
Writ Large – our BRAND new Large Print Books Section

We are very excited to announce the launch of our Large Print Books section. I’m sure we all know someone who no longer enjoys reading because they’re straining to see every word. If so, steer them to us. We know it’s difficult to find a good selection of large print books in bookshops so we have teamed up with the Large Print Bookshop and gathered the cream of the crop. We wouldn’t claim to have thought of everything, but we are certainly striving for it! Just look out for the Large Print Books in our ‘other formats’ box that’s on every title page.

And finally, don’t forget to have a quick look at these noteworthy titles …
