A twisting and ever evolving sci-fi fantasy story focusing on a collection of unique teenagers.
‘The Ingenious and the Colour of Life’ by J.Y. Sam is a twisting and ever evolving sci-fi fantasy story focusing on a collection of unique teenagers. I was immediately intrigued by the prologue. I love openings that leave me with lots of questions as I dive into the opening chapter to discover the answers.
The plotline is multi-faceted, detailed and gripping. An old government project to create a generation of genetically modified genius humans is sabotaged, with its professors and participants escaping into hiding. But now the youngest child created by ‘Project Ingenious’ has gone missing, as has another young man, Jake, who had been hacking into the servers looking for more information about the project’s participants.
Each of the characters have their own unique voice, we follow the story mainly from the perspective of project’s children Melody and Tai as well as Jake’s girlfriend Calista, who is caught up in events while looking for her boyfriend. A lot of time is spent developing each character's voice, showing each of the characters before they are brought together. . I grew to know and understand each of their personalities as well as each of their unique abilities, which I’m sure will set the reader up in good stead for future books in the trilogy.
‘The Ingenious and the Colour of Life’ is a detailed and entertaining story that manages to flow even as it jumps from perspective to perspective. A brilliant YA sci-fi and Fantasy full of twists and a concept that offers an ethical dilemma to ponder as you immerse yourself in this gripping story. The Epilogue has me eager to find out what happens in the next book in the series.
