Deaf Wish

This is a book that needs concentration but has a good plot and makes quite an enjoyable read.

Gilbert (Gil) is a man of older years and is the white husband in a mixed-race marriage. After divorcing his wife, Sandra, he has a new relationship with a young Spanish girl. Some years later, he goes over to Portugal to attend the wedding of one of his two sons, both of whom he hasn't seen for many years. There he becomes involved with his wife's Spanish family and friends. A tragedy occurs, and for Gil, things go from bad to worse as he becomes embroiled, and blamed for some shady goings-on. This book is an easy read, in that it is written well and flows along nicely, with lots of twists and turns and backstabbing. The author portrays the characters well, even if some are caricatures. None of them are particularly likeable, and I have to say I didn't really care about any of them that much. There were a lot of characters in the story and I found it difficult to remember who was who-who was married to whom, who was a brother/sister and so on. Also, I thought that there was too much going on at certain times, and the plot got quite complicated and hard to follow. This is a book that needs concentration but has a good plot and makes quite an enjoyable read.
