This is a story told between Nina, Angel and Lucas. Their meeting is quite extraordinary but it begins with Nina waiting in a restaurant for her blind date. As she feared, he is awful and she cannot get through the meeting fast enough. She is too polite to just leave.
Not wishing to prolong the evening she orders olives for herself and begins to choke. The quick-thinking waitress Angel performs the Heimlich Manoeuvre. She saves her life and changes it forever.
Nina is a mum to Sam and an English teacher at the local comprehensive. Recently left by her husband of 15 years, she is bereft to find that he is now living with a younger woman.
Having fallen asleep on the sofa, she hears and loud banging on her front door. Fearing it could be bad news as Sam is with his father before going on holiday, she opens it. What happens in the next few hours is nothing short of horrific. The waitress Angel is on her doorstep, soaking wet and barges her way into the house. Being threatened by her with a gun Nina has little option but to find her dry clothes. It is not long after that when Angel's brother turns up with another surprise.
The author does justice to a rather complicated plot. The characters show great compassion and are well depicted.
A good read for those who like a quick exciting read.

Without giving much away, a hostage situation occurs and things won't ever be the same for Nina when Angel's brother arrives at the house carrying a newborn baby and covered in blood.
A gripping novel and a real page-turner. Once you think you know what's happening more doors open to leave you guessing once again.
The characters in this book developed nicely over time and before you know it you realise you are warming to ones you didn't think you would. The book was nicely written and easy to read.

I absolutely loved this book! I haven’t read the author before but was very impressed.
Set in a quiet ‘middle England’ town, lives Nina, divorced mum of one, with her son Sam, who is away with his father and the new girlfriend in France. Thank God, because all hell is about to break loose at home!
I thought this story was well crafted, used lots of modern references, some so recent you just know it was written this year, which makes me think it will probably not stand the test of time, although who knows? Maybe kids will be studying it in 50 years and laughing at our ‘modern’ world.
I have to say I was hooked from the outset. I loved The main characters and empathised with them. I was, however, really disappointed with the ending. To me, it was like a glorious meal. There has obviously been a lot of planning over which ingredients should go into it. Then those ingredients have been carefully prepared, marinated if you will. Everything has been carefully put together, added at just the right time, in just the right quantities, to make sure all the flavours come together in just the correct way at the right time, so that it is served beautifully. But then it is eaten in double quick time. I just felt that the whole story got wrapped up in 1 page at the end! It has been so carefully structured and mastered throughout, keeping me on the edge of my seat and then I just felt let down by the ending.

Sounds like one of those books about the challenges of moving on when a long-term relationship ends? Well, sort of – if your way of moving on is to get involved in a hostage situation involving two damaged, unpredictable young people and a kidnapped baby.
When Nina – our protagonist – goes home after her abortive blind date, she is about to live through a very strange and disturbing night. And that is only the start of things. Once the night is over, Nina is compelled to try to find out what lies behind her ordeal. With its themes of domestic abuse and violence, this is a dark tale which whips along at a great pace. Some of the characters’ actions strain credulity (more than once I found myself shouting – usually at Nina – “what on earth are you doing that for???”).
However, despite the occasional hard-to-believe choices made by all three characters, this is a pacy and engrossing page-turner. Thoroughly enjoyable.

This book is a real page turner. From the first page where we meet Nina with all her raw imperfections and harsh self doubt, to the shocking events that unfold with some uninvited visitors to her home, you find yourself both rooting for and shouting at the three main characters in equal measure. These are well defined characters that take you on their journey with them and through the twists and turns of the story, you question everyone, question every decision and try to peer through the revelations to uncover the truth. The chapters are short and alternate between the main characters which keeps the pace of the story going and entwines these believable people together. This is the first of Cass Green's books that I have read and certainly won't be the last. I definitely recommend this book.

Nina is held captive by a woman called Angel, who only hours earlier has saved her life. Now Angel, her brother and a stolen baby have invaded her home and she has to endure a night of terror. She starts to learn more about her captives and slowly starts to wonder if their horrific story can be true. Even after her ordeal is over, she holds onto that thought, which leads her into even deeper trouble. This is a thriller that delivers and I really found it impossible to put down.

I was getting quite irked at times when I wasn't able to pick the story up and continue with it as I was so engrossed with it. Since there are only a couple of main characters to the story you become very attached to them and want to follow it through to the end in one go. Due to having an easy-to-read and uncomplicated narrative, it would be a pleasure to fly through this book in a day...I only wish I could have!
I particularly liked how the first chapter in the story had such extreme consequences for that character in the rest of the book and it was an ingenious idea to incorporate such a plan. The plot was tight and well thought out and really kept me constantly suspicious of Angel and Lucas' intentions and I was also very intrigued as to what had actually happened to bring them to Nina's door that night in the first place. Baby Zach was a star too and I truly felt for his distress during his ordeal.
I liked Angel and I definitely had a soft spot for Lucas and because I like reading flashbacks in stories I enjoyed reading their story from when they were young.
It was an apt ending and the very last page had me smiling from ear to ear, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have no hesitation in recommending it to thriller readers young and old alike!
