Easter Island Synopsis

Text in English & German. Easter Island, called Rapa Nui by its native, lies in an isolated location in the south-eastern Pacific, 3,700 km off the Chilean coast, 4,000 km away from Tahiti. The island's relative fame is founded on the legen-dary stone statues, called moai, which attract many visitors every year.

The huge statues have invited speculation about their origin and still occupy the minds of researchers, who interpret the figures as a connection between life on earth and the hereafter. Kevin Costner's movie "Rapa Nui", which portrays the history of the moai and the human influence on the island's vegetation, also contributed significantly to the island's fame. With his photographs, Reiner Sahm serves as a guide to this mythical place with its many unsolved puzzles and secrets.
