Maria Merian was an influential 17th-century entomological pioneer who made several incredible insect discoveries. While her successes were later buried and suppressed in a male-dominated field, the true extent of her brilliance has recently re-emerged.

At age 52, she set sail with her daughter from the Netherlands to South America to study insects in the jungles of what is now known as Suriname. Here she spent nearly two years sketching and observing the creatures she found there. Her detailed illustrations were not only scientifically valuable, but vibrant and beautiful artworks which transported the European public to these exotic locations.

This delightful colouring book includes a selection of her gorgeous butterfly and flora illustrations, provided by the archives of the Royal Collection Trust. Each double-page spread has a black-and-white line drawing to colour and the original full-colour artwork beside it for reference.
