Author G. A. Henty and his brother Frederick both served in the Crimean War; Henty parlayed his experience into a budding career as a war correspondent and journalist, while his brother Frederick was killed within weeks of his deployment.
Henty used their experiences as fodder for Jack Archer, a thrilling action-adventure tale geared for younger audiences that is set during the bloody conflict between Russia and a coalition comprising Britain, France, Britain, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire.
