The valley in which the abby stood was called, long prior to the foundation of the religious house, Pant y Groes, or the Bottom of the Cross, doubtlessly from the antient column erected in memory of Eliseg. This was a house of Cistertians, founded in the year 1200, by Madoc ap Gryffydd Maelor, lord of Bromfield, and grandson by the mother's side to Owen Gwynedd prince of Wales.
