Visitors

Visitors Synopsis

The acclaimed literary novel about family relationships, ageing and generational conflict from the Booker Prize-winning author of Hotel du Lac

Dorothea May lives a quiet, ordered life, content with the routines that have shaped her world. But her tranquillity is disrupted when her friend Kitty Levinson announces the forthcoming marriage of her granddaughter. What's more, Kitty, in her usual imperious fashion, expects Dorothea to accommodate the bridegroom's friend, Steve Best.

As the wedding approaches, the scene is set for a highly charged conflict of generations, in which the claims of the young are in stark and selfish contrast to the disabling propriety of the old.

Witty and perceptive, Visitors is a vivid exploration of family relationships, ageing, responsibility and social expectations, a modern classic perfect for readers of Penelope Lively and Helen Garner.
