Lovereading view...

Tales of overwhelming pandemics striking our world are like buses: you wait for ages and all of a sudden, like a plague, they all emerge at the same time. Recent months have witnessed, among others, the Cronin trilogy reach its conclusion, Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven and Ezekiel Boone's The Hatching and now here is a veritable doorstep of a catastrophe book by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King, who himself penned The Stand...). And it's an undoubted winner; one of the more original examples to hit the genre. A new disease sweeps the globe, infecting people with Dragonscale, which eventually has them self-consume in flames. Frightening enough but where Hill ups the odds is not just in his evocation of a world in overdrive to destruction but in creating a gallery of truly memorable characters like doughty, infected and pregnant nurse Harper and, of course, the eponymous Fireman whose superpowers and unusual talents might well hold the key to mankind's survival. Breathless adventures, pulsing emotions, things that go bump in the night and so much more, with surprises lurking on the corner of every page: a major achievement in a genre that many had thought had nowhere further to go. Will provide you with nightmares and epiphanies in equal share. ~ Maxim Jakubowski

If you like Joe Hill you might also like to read books by Stephen King, Clive Barker and Alex Bell.

  • Debbie Patrick - 'What a good well written book. This isn’t a quick read with over 700 pages BUT it’s a good one. You actually care about the people in the book which is what makes a good book. Well recommended.'
  • Sue Packer - 'The Fireman is a post-apocalyptic thriller which, through the skill of the writer, makes the impossible seem plausible...so full of drama and cliff-hangers that I didn’t want it to end.'
  • Edel Waugh - 'This is an epic tale of survival against the odds and one woman's determination to do what she has to do for her unborn child, no matter what.'
  • Angie Rhodes - 'The Fireman is a fantastic read, it captures the imagination...A must read, and a fab one for everyone who loved Stephen King and Dean Koontz.'
  • Victoria Goldman - 'The Fireman features great writing, sharp dialogue and a complex page-turning plot.'
  • Jacki Moorcroft  - 'A must read book! A fantastic story of the true nature of people caught up in a world-wide epidemic. This book leaves you with a bittersweet, smoky taste in your mouth for a long time afterwards.'
  • Katherine Stewart - 'An engrossing epic which grabs you from the start and never lets up to the end.'
  • Alfred Nobile - 'Well written, with well-rounded characters that draw the reader into an adventure that enthrals and grips. A book I would recommend and urge you to read.'

A big thank you for the two Lovereading bags I ordered, which have arrived safely. I love mine and will use it with pride. The bags are lovely quality, sturdy and support a good cause in the Rewrap initiative; I think they make the perfect accessory for any book lover. The second bag was a gift for my sister and she says she will take it to her next book group meeting to help spread the Lovereading word. Once again, many thanks. Emily Wright

Synopsis

The Fireman by Joe Hill

Nobody knew where the virus came from. FOX News said it had been set loose by ISIS, using spores that had been invented by the Russians in the 1980s. MSNBC said sources indicated it might've been created by engineers at Halliburton and stolen by culty Christian types fixated on the Book of Revelation. CNN reported both sides. And while every TV station debated the cause, the world burnt. Pregnant school nurse, HARPER GRAYSON, has seen lots of people burn on TV, but the first person she saw burn for real was in the playground behind her school. But when she realises she has become infected, she is determined to find a way to survive - at least long enough to see her child born. No matter what is left of the world for them to live in. With the epic scope of THE PASSAGE and the emotional impact of THE ROAD, this is one woman's story of survival at the end of the world.

Reviews

'If you haven't yet grabbed a copy of Joe Hill's THE FIREMAN, you need to. Original and gripping, a page-turner George R.R.Martin I devoured this book as if the pages themselves were on fire...an end of the world tale with a blazing heart of hope at its core. A contender for book of the year' Sarah Pinborough, author of 13 MINUTES

'Joe Hill really could set the world on fire with this book: cleverly imagined and a compulsive read' Katherine Cowdrey, The Bookseller

'Joe Hill has always been good, but he's created something incandescent here, soaring and original. He's a master storyteller who writes with fire in his veins' Lauren Beukes, author of Broken Monsters

'Very well-drawn characters, some serious shocks, a great sense of humour and a willingness to break hearts as well as raise pulse rates.' SciFiNow

'I would put money on this being huge. Can't put it down Sam Baker, The Pool You'll be instantly hooked if you're obsessed with The Walking Dead. It's got the whole post-apocalyptic world nailed...there is a brilliant humour amid the darkness, and the action scenes feel like a movie' Cosmopolitan

'Taps into fears we all have about the world coming to an end, as Donald Trump stokes the fires of racial hatred in America, wars continue across the planet and diseases such as Zika and Ebola spread with shocking speed.' The Mail on Sunday

'Hill's writing has matured along with his ideas. He plays out the apocalypse so quickly and efficiently, through small-town witnesses and television broadcasts, that it feels absolutely devastating. And in the aftermath, he juggles a huge cast of characters with aplomb, giving each their time to shine, yet still managing to keep the tension high throughout' The Guardian

'Original, compulsive and very frightening' Woman & Home
