Summer Sun, Reading Fun

Apparently 20% of people who read only read on holiday so having the right books on hand for that holiday is absolutely vital and that's where Lovereading comes in. We have been earmarking our favourites all year and after much debate we have decided upon a special range of books perfect to pop in your own or your families suitcase. Take a look at our Summer Reading categories today and get choosing. There are eight themed categories that cover fiction and non-fiction, from Action Packed and Exciting through Emotional and Absorbing all the way to Mysterious and Thrilling. There's something for everyone so why not download a free Opening Extract, make your choice, then allow your Summer holiday to glide by? And, if you know any teenagers then do tell them about their special Teen Summer Reads section with stories and characters so gripping you will be telling them to put their books down!

Bloody Foreigners! – Maxim’s International Crime Titles

One of our new categories this month celebrates the rise of international crime-writing with one of our editorial experts, Maxim Jakubowski. In the wake of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo phenomenon and the Wallander novels, Scandinavian crime thrillers are all the rage.   But there are a whole host of great crime authors from all over the world and this section is the place to find them. For instance, The Stronger Sex, by Hans Werner Kettenbach, is a clever and psychological exploration of eroticism, death and revenge; or Affairs of State by Dominique Manotti is a classic tale of corruption, governments, intrigue, murder and sex. This to name but two! If crime is your thing, investigate this section and you’ll be kept occupied for a month or two at least! Plus, don’t miss another crime favourite of ours that was one of our Debuts of the Month in May. It’s from a brand new crime publisher called Mulholland and the not-to-be-missed debut is Guilt by Association by Marcia Clark… Watch out for more from both of them in the future.

The Villa Girls  Nicky Pellegrino Four friends, a sun-drenched escape and a holiday that will change everything...possibly forever.

Horrifiction! - Maxim Best of Horror

Maxim has been particularly busy of late with another new category and a celebration of all things ghostly, ghoulish, gory and scary! Often overlooked by serious critics as lightweight (blame Hollywood!) this genre now has a promising generation of great writers offering intelligent plots as well as frights and thrills. There is so much to discover, like the amazing Peter Straub – a former Stephen King collaborator – whose disturbing drama, A Dark Matter is out now. Of course there is such variety and choice, that we can’t mention it all here, but look out for the gripping Dan Simmons, the epic Justin Cronin and the imaginatively dark China Miéville. Why not come to the site, see for yourself and take a journey into the dark heart of excellent writing!

One Stop Shop for eBooks

Frustrated that you have to go to different sites for different eBook formats? Well, don’t be! Lovereading has the very first one stop shop for eBook buyers! For the first time, users of any of the main formats (iBook, ePub and Kindle) can find what they need in just one place. This is a unique online service and it’s proving a hit with the ‘e-readers’ on the site if our email postbag is anything to go by! Titles with digital versions are highlighted in one easily navigated section - you’re one click away from great stories on the go! Not only that, but to make it EVEN simpler, check out our ‘eBooks of the Month’ below and choose from the titles that we think are the bee’s knees!

Happy Birthday to Us! Lovereading is 25!

In 2009 a Danish internet agency calculated that a ‘realyear’ was the equivalent of 4.7 internet years. So following this logic we are now celebrating 25 happy years of Lovereading.co.uk. Tomark this silver jubilee we have selected just five titles – one for every ‘real’ year, that have changed our lives in our short life to date. You can see our choices in a special section – and why not discuss them, or tell us your own, on our Literary and Contemporary Facebook page?

Read the Shortlist! – Short Stories

Sometimes you want a quick read and, without the time for a full novel, short stories can be great travel companions. We’ve selected three stunning, concise tales to choose from: Aphrodite’s Hat by Salley Vickers - a brilliant exploration of love and relationships; or perhaps pick up The Best British Short Stories edited by Nicholas Royle, which is exactly what it sounds like! Finally, check out Last Fling – a collection of award-winning shorts by Sue Gee, set in the past in rural England. Go on … Sell yourself short!

Happy Lovereading!
