Austen fans worldwide are about to see their favourite heros and heroines enter the digital dimension in the new BBC Austen themed Facebook game Jane Austen: Rogues and Romance. The BBC’s Digital Entertainment and Legacy Games division has recently released it, and we hope that you Austen lovers of the 21st Century enjoy it – though it is a far cry from reading the adventures in print. The object of the game is simple: Players must find newlyweds, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy of the revered Pride and Prejudice, and persuade them to return to the much loved novel. As they do so, they’re tasked to find hidden objects and play find-the-difference games in scenes from Austen’s six novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and (my personal favorite) Persuasion. The game is of course free to play yet like many Facebook games, encourages users to make in-app purchases in the form of gifts and unnecessary enhancements such as bundles of diamonds and other adornments. A literary-loving reporter frankly claimed “I found the challenges dull — which, to be fair, is how I’ve felt about every Facebook game I’ve tried — but the literary touches are wonderfully done”. So, a bit of a mixed bag, which was always to be the case with modernising Austen - let us know if you like it!
