The Little Prince

The Little Prince

Author: Antoine De Saint-Exupery Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2018

“All grown-ups were children once, although few of them remember it”. So writes author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in the dedication of this remarkable novella; a poignant line that epitomises The Little Prince’s cross-generational power and continued resonance. If you’re looking for a literary-gift-of-a-lifetime for any little and not-so-little ones in your life, look no further than this Wordsworth Collector’s Edition of an undisputed twentieth-century classic.  Published in 1943, The Little Prince tells the unforgettable tale of a young boy with golden hair and a habit of repeating questions until they are answered. Known as the “little prince”, the boy recounts his life story while the narrator - a pilot, like the author - repairs his plane, racing against his eight-day supply of water. The little prince’s tales of other planets are enthralling and hauntingly allegorical. Once read, this is a story to return to through a lifetime, and here beautifully packaged as a hardback that will certainly survive multiple re-readings. Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables

Anne entered my heart in my childhood, I devoured this book and fell in love. There is something about the setting of Prince Edward Island in Canada that charms. The characters feel so very real, and Anne Shirley, well, she is completely delightful. As I entered my teenage years Anne grew with me and I still call this series one of my favourites. These are books that I return to again and again, they deliver the most wonderful hug.

The Wind in the Willows

Author: Kenneth Grahame Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2018

This new Wordsworth Collector’s Edition of Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 classic will make an attractive addition to any child’s library, or any grown-up’s for that matter. With a stylish cover illustration, compact hardback format, and gleaming gold foil, it makes the perfect present.  As for the story, readers of seven and upwards who love nature, animals and adventures of a gentler kind will be entertained by the cast of anthropomorphised characters and enthralled by the pastoral setting. In many ways, the animals aren’t animals at all - they’re essentially human, a gaggle of wealthy gentlemen with plenty of leisure time for “messing about on the river”. Amusingly and fittingly, the author’s original title was Mr Mole and His Mates, for this classic has friendship at its heart. Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

Author: Lewis Carroll Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2018

The story is timeless and can be read at so many different levels.  It’s a book that can be read by people of all ages; for children it’s a wonderful underworld fantasy that will develop a passion for reading  imaginative writing and for everyone else there’s innuendo, puzzling situations that require deciphering, political machinations and bucket loads of surrealism.  Plenty of food for thought and a real antidote to the modern world.

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden

Author: Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2018

How I loved The Secret Garden as a child - the slow-building, spellbinding sense of magic, the enchantment of nature, the gradual, glowing, transformative friendship between (initially moody, miserable) Mary and Dickon.  While the period The Secret Garden evokes is very different from our own, the magical elements at its heart radiate through the particulars of its age. And what better way to introduce today’s young readers to the magic than with this Wordsworth Collector’s Edition? With a stylishly illustrated cover - replete with gold foil - and lovely hardback format, this will add plenty of panache to home and school libraries. Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights

Author: Emily Brontë Format: Hardback Release Date: 15/09/2019

November 2012 Guest Editor Kate Mosse on Wuthering Heights... Powerful and elegiac, a novel of drama, passion and compelling characterisation. Most exceptional of all, though, the brilliance of Bronte’s descriptions of landscape and light on the Yorkshire Moors has had a major influence on my writing about southwest France.

Jane Eyre

One of Jeanette Winterson's favourite books. April 2010 Good Housekeeping selection. On My Bookshelf by Hilary Mantel... ‘I read Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre when I was very young and cared less about the love story than about the secret of the woman in the attic. It’s what a story should be – gripping, but have psychological truth and depth.

Peter Pan

Author: J.M. Barrie Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2018

J.M. Barrie’s timeless tale of Peter Pan, the boy who never grows up never gets old itself. While this dazzlingly imaginative story may have been written in another age, the story itself is ageless, and can be enjoyed by all ages too. Children and adults alike will get caught up in the adventure, the magic, and its big themes, among them the value of imagination, the value of courage versus cowardice, and the eternal, universal conflict between wanting to be a child, but having to grow up.  What’s more, this Wordsworth Collector’s Edition - an elegant hardback, with gold foiled frontage, gorgeous cover artwork, and soft-focus line drawings peppered throughout - will make the ideal gift for readers who’ve yet to discover its unique delights. July 2010 Good Housekeeping selection. On My Bookshelf by Lynda La Plante... Little Women by Louisa May Alcott inspired me when I was very young. Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility

Author: Jane Austen Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2020

Even if you have seen the numerous films and TV adaptations there is nothing quite as good as reading the original book about the Dashwood sisters and the complications and misunderstandings that take place in their love lives. A true classic, a clever, wonderful, romantic read.     April 2010 Guest Editor Katharine McMahon on Jane Austen... I can't not choose her.  And whichever I've read last is always my favourite.  The nuance of emotion, the understanding of human nature revealed by Austen constantly delights me.  When I reread Sense and Sensibility recently, for the first time Elinor came across as quite prissy and destined to marry a rather spineless husband.  I wonder if that was intended?

September 2009 Good Housekeeping selection. On My Bookshelf by Penny Smith... This wasn’t a set text for us at school, but I read it anyway and it got me into the classics big time. I had such vivid pictures of all the characters and places. Sadly, every adaptation, including the fantastic one with Colin Firth, was never a patch on my image of what they all looked like and were like. Plus I just love a love story… GMTV presenter Penny Smith is passionate about books and is now a novelist herself; her latest fiction, After The Break, is published by Harper Perennial.

May 2014 Guest Editor Daisy Goodwin on Persuasion... I love Jane Austen with a deep and enduring passion, and I think the story of Anne Elliott’s second chance is possibly my favourite.  The way that she revives as a character like a flower soaking up water is quite miraculous.  It is also has a plot of clockwork perfection.  I read this book at least once a year and I always find something new to marvel at.

Northanger Abbey

Northanger Abbey

Author: Jane Austen Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/09/2020

Full to the brim with ready wit and arch social commentary, this amusing and intelligent book is as relevant today as it was when published nearly 200 years ago. If you haven't previously read any of Austen’s works, this is the perfect place to start, it’s one of her lesser known but more stimulating and provocative novels. Quite literally a book of two halves, we have a story of a young woman learning the difference between reality and fantasy and then a consummate commentary from the author on the literary world at the time.  Austen introduces an almost anti-heroine, a kind, caring but not particularly captivating Catherine, then surrounds her with four fascinatingly different characters who range from compassionate, intelligent and gracious to self obsessed, mercenary and petulant. As well as the engaging story, you also discover an author who appears to be somewhat on the warpath. She actually talks to you from the page, her views are so clear, you could be having a face-to-face discussion with her. If you already know Northanger Abbey, reacquaint yourself with this fascinating novel.  This actual edition is charming, a perfect size for the hand bag and one to treasure.
