Former US President Barack Obama has once again released a 14-strong list of book recommendations to read this summer, continuing a tradition from his time in the White House.
Posting the list on Twitter, Obama commented: "I’ve read a couple of great books this year and wanted to share some of my favorites so far. What have you been reading this summer?"
Obama’s choice spans fiction, non-fiction and narrative reporting, and includes Hanya Yanagihara’s 720-page third novel To Paradise, and Emily St John Mandel’s Sea of Tranquility, a work of speculative fiction and follow-up to her dystopian pandemic novel Station Eleven. Mandel appears to be an Obama favourite, having also appeared on the former president's reading list last year with her previous book The Glass Hotel.
Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut Black Cake, which was snapped up by Michael Joseph at auction for six figures. The epic multi-generational family drama takes place in the Caribbean, the UK and the US and centres on the relationship between an estranged brother and sister. Awarded a LoveReading Star Book, this is an incredible novel. Crossing generations and continents, and laying bare the complexities of the Caribbean diaspora, this dazzling debut teems with heart-rending family secrets.
Another LoveReading Star Book made the Obama cut, Razorblade Tears by S.A Cosby. This powerful, eloquent thriller takes you into the painful world of two fathers who regret past choices while seeking vengeance for the murder of their sons.
