The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Other Poems

Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge Format: Paperback Release Date: 26/07/2018

Described by his friend Charles Lamb as an archangel slightly damaged , Coleridge was deemed a towering genius by many of his contemporaries, and one who, in conversation, had no equal. Fascinated by, among other subjects, psychology, philosophy and chemistry, his mind roamed extravagantly and without restraint, leading Hazlitt to opine that there is no subject on which he has not touched, none on which he has rested . Yet, while this literary itinerancy left some to lament his refusal to devote himself to verse, Coleridge remains one of English literature's most enduringly popular poets. From sonnets and ballads to elegies and intimate blank verse, this collection brings together poetry written throughout Coleridge's life, particularly his prolific early years, which saw the composition of poems such as `Christabel', `The Eolian Harp' and `Frost at Midnight'. This volume also includes `The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', one of the most popular poems ever written in the English language, and `Kubla Khan', which highlight Coleridge's gift for suffusing his strange, haunting and captivating verse with unsurpassed musical and rhythmic qualities.

The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 9 Aids to Reflection

Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge Format: Hardback Release Date: 04/07/2018

Coleridge's Aids to Reflection was written at a time when new movements in thought were starting to unsettle belief. It was read with admiration by early Victorians such as John Sterling, F. D. Maurice, and Thomas Arnold, contributing to the formation of the Broad Church Movement, and with respect by members of the High Church Movement, including John Henry Newman. Coleridge had intended simply to produce a selection from the writings of the seventeenth-century Archbishop Robert Leighton with comments of his own, but as he worked at the book he found the commentary expanding to take in the fruits of his religious thinking over the years, so that the second, and more important, part of the volume was totally dominated by his thought. In this, the first major edition of Aids to Reflection, the intricate story of Coleridge's changing conception is unfolded by way of an introduction and detailed notes, the surviving materials for the volume being printed in appendixes. The introduction also traces the subsequent influence of the work in England and America; further appendixes include James Marsh's influential preface to the first American edition, which is reproduced in full. The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 4 (Part II) The Friend

Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge Format: Paperback Release Date: 21/06/2018

Published originally in 1809-1810, The Friend was revised in 1812, by public demand. In 1818, a three-volume rifacimento appeared in which Coleridge attempted to dispel obscurity, tie up loose threads of reasoning, and provide more mature apercus. Now, in the Collected Works, The Friend has been re-edited to return to Coleridge's 1818 text. His emendations, cuts, and marginal comments noted in six copies of the work, as well as manuscript additions and deletions, have been included as footnotes. The editor's footnotes also elucidate sources and themes and provide translations of the many Latin and Greek passages. The entire periodical Friend is given as an appendix, with the 1812 revisions. In The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, one of the best-known and best-loved poems in the English language, a grizzled old sailor stops a man on his way to a wedding and tells a terrifying story. He speaks of how he doomed the crew of his ship by shooting dead an albatross, awakened the wrath of ocean spirits, met Death himself, and must now walk the earth for ever and share his tragic tale of sin, guilt and - ultimately - redemption. This Macmillan Collector's Library edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's longest major poem features illustrations by Gustave Dore, the most remarkable wood engraver of the nineteenth century, and an introduction by writer and journalist Ned Halley. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge Format: Hardback Release Date: 19/04/2016

Based on a comparison of early editions, manuscripts, and copies annotated by the poet himself, this edition provides a reliable text of Coleridge's last prose work, first published in 1830. Originally intended to influence public opinion on the Catholic Emancipation Bill of 1829, the work became a brief but brilliant synthesis of Coleridge's political and theological thought, whose influence extended well beyond the nineteenth century. John Colmer's introduction and notes place the work in its literary and historical context and they illuminate Coleridge's process of composition and the development of his ideas on Church and State. John Comer's introduction and notes place the work in its literary and historical context and they illuminate Coleridge's process of composition and the development of his ideas on Church and State. Biographia Literaria by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge Format: Hardback Release Date: 22/09/2014

This is a new, fully annotated critical edition of this key Romantic text. This new edition of the Biographia supersedes all previous editions. Crucially, it takes into consideration three decades of research and scholarship on Coleridge and includes all Coleridge's references and allusions. In tracing all unattributed references, Adam Roberts has in some cases opened up whole new avenues of interpretation for the text, materially altering or changing the way we read this classic work. This new scholarly edition for a 21st-century readership includes a detailed Critical Introduction, a Textual Introduction, the text of the Biographia Literaria, including Coleridge's notes and editorial footnotes; Endnotes; and a Bibliography. It is likely to stand as the definitive textual edition for many years to come. This is the first edition of the Biographia in 3 decades and the first ever to identify all of Coleridge's many allusions and quotations. It draws on the most up-to-date scholarship on the text. It fully explains the genesis, the poetic and philosophical contexts and debates surrounding the text. It provides the chance to revitalise Romanticism studies more generally.

The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner

Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Marina Warner Format: Paperback Release Date: 01/05/2014

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MARINA WARNER AND ILLUSTRATIONS BY MERVYN PEAKE Coleridge's celebrated poem was written at the suggestion of William Wordsworth in the early days of their friendship, and published for the first time in 1798. It is the story of a nightmare voyage to the South Pole told by the sole survivor, the bright-eyed ancient mariner whose wanton killing of an albatross, a bird of good omen, brought misfortune on the ship and all its crew. The poem is brilliantly illustrated by Mervyn Peake. His powerful, arresting images perfectly express the qualities of the text, its gothic atmosphere and supernatural terrors, ultimately softened by pity and the hope of redemption.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The Mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The Wedding-Guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience and fear to fascination as the Mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: for example, Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create either a sense of danger, of the supernatural or of serenity, depending on the mood of each of the different parts of the poem. The poem explores violation of nature and its resulting psychological effects on the Mariner, who interprets the fates of his crew to be a direct result of his having shot down an albatross.

pubOne.info present you this new edition. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born on the 21st of October, 1772, youngest of many children of the Rev. John Coleridge, Vicar of the Parish and Head Master of the Grammar School of Ottery St. Mary, in Devonshire. One of the poet's elder brothers was the grandfather of Lord Chief Justice Coleridge. Coleridge's mother was a notable housewife, as was needful in the mother of ten children, who had three more transmitted to her from her husband's former wife. Coleridge's father was a kindly and learned man, little sophisticated, and distinguishing himself now and then by comical acts of what is called absence of mind. Charles Buller, afterwards a judge, was one of his boys, and, when her husband's life seemed to be failing, had promised what help he could give to the anxious wife. When his father died, Samuel Taylor Coleridge was but eight years old, and Charles Buller obtained for him his presentation to Christ's Hospital. Coleridge's mind delighted in far wandering over the fields of thought; from a boy he took intense delight in dreamy speculation on the mysteries that lie around the life of man

Hollywood actor Michael Sheen reads one of the most famous poems in the English language, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner , in this collection, which is part of the Naxos AudioBooks The Great Poets series. Radical and daring, Coleridge worked with Wordsworth to transform poetry and bring it closer to the people. Original, atmospheric and pensive, the power of Coleridge's plain-spoken poetry inspired the tradition of Romantic poetry that sprung up in his wake. This popular anthology also contains Coleridge's other major narrative poem Christabel , as well as Kubla Khan , Love , Frost at Midnight and The Lime-Tree Bower My Prison .

Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 1817 work Biographia Literaria is an autobiography in discourse; loosely structured and non-linear, the work is meditative and contains numerous philosophical essays. Initially criticized as the product of Coleridge's opiate-driven descent into illness, more recent critics have given the work far more credit and recognition. The book is the origin of the well-known critical idea of "e;willing suspension of disbelief."e;

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was one of the most versatile minds in European intellectual history, and a shaping influence in the development of English poetry. As a radical young poet in the years following the French Revolution, Coleridge collaborated with Wordsworth in Lyrical Ballads (1798) and was by turns dramatist, political journalist, lecturer and religious thinker. This edition includes his two most famous poems, Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner , as well as such blank-verse 'conversation' poems as The Eolian Harp , This Lime Tree Bower My Prison and Frost at Midnight . Not least of the attractions of Heather Jackson's selection is the earlier version of the Rime which she presents in full, along with the later, better-known version. Demonstrating the diversity characteristic of Coleridge's work, from early politically-inspired sonnets, to an epitaph he composed for himself shortly before his death, this substantial collection is supplemented by an introduction and notes. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge Format: Paperback Release Date: 28/10/2008

This authoritative edition was originally published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode. It brings together a unique combination of Coleridge's poetry and prose - all the major poems, complemented by important criticism, letters, and marginalia - to give the essence of his work and thinking. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet, critic, and radical thinker, exerted an enormous influence over contemporaries as different as Wordsworth, Southey and Lamb. He was also a dedicated reformer, and set out to use his reputation as a public speaker and literary philosopher to change the course of English thought. This collection represents the best of Coleridge's poetry from every period of his life, particularly his prolific early years, which produced The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Christabel, and Kubla Khan. The central section of the book is devoted to his most significant critical work, Biographia Literaria, and reproduces it in full. It provides a vital background for both the poetry section which precedes it and for the shorter prose works which follow. There is also a generous sample of his letters, notebooks, and marginalia, some recently discovered, which show a different, more spontaneous side to his fascinating and complex personality.
