J. Gordon Melton, Ph.D., is director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has a Masters of Divinity from the Garrett Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Dr. Melton is the author or editor of more than 3 dozen books and anthologies and he has written hundreds of papers and articles for scholarly journals. Among the works he has written on religion in America are The Encyclopedia of American Religions, American Religions: An Illustrated History, and Encyclopedia of African American Religion.
