Prof. Hem Shanker Ray obtained his B.Tech. (Hons) degree in Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1962, and his Master's degree Master of Applied Science (M.A. Sc.) (1963) and Ph.D. (l966) degrees in Metallurgy at the University of Toronto, Canada.
Prof. Ray was a lecturer and assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (1967-1980), a manager/senior technologist - Research and Development, Pilkington Research Centre, Lathom, England (1977-1979) and professor of Metallurgical Engineering (1980-1990) and dean of students' affairs (1988-1990) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He also served as a research associate at the University of Toronto and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof. Ray was director of the Regional Research Laboratory, Bhubaneswar from 1990-2000, and an emeritus scientist at the Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata.
