Season in Hell

Season in Hell

Author: Arthur Rimbaud Format: eBook Release Date: 31/01/2013

A Season in Hell is an extended poem written and published in 1873 by French writer Arthur Rimbaud. The book had a considerable influence on later artists and poets, for example the Surrealists. Henry Miller was important in introducing Rimbaud to America in the sixties. He once attempted an English translation of the book and wrote an extended essay on Rimbaud and A Season in Hell titled The Time of the Assassins. The poem is loosely divided into nine parts, some of which are much shorter than others. They differ markedly in tone and narrative comprehensibility, with some, such as "e;Bad Blood,"e; 'being much more obviously influenced by Rimbaud's drug use than others, some argue. Academic critics have arrived at many varied and often entirely incompatible conclusions as to what meaning and philosophy may or may not be contained in the text, and will continue to do so.

Arthur Rimbaud: The Poems

Arthur Rimbaud: The Poems

Author: Arthur Rimbaud Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 20/01/2012

The meteoric and turbulent poetic career of Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) was crammed into four teenage years, in which he wrote some wonderful short poems and two masterpieces, The Illuminations and A Season in Hell . At nineteen he then turned his back on the literary life and left France, eventually travelling to Aden, Ethiopia and Somalia, while working as a trader. Oliver Bernard's Rimbaud was first published in the Penguin Poets series in 1962. This newly revised edition of his superb presentation adds the Latin verse which Rimbaud wrote as school exercises. The poems are presented in bilingual form with Bernard's lively and accurate prose versions below the French. Together with an illuminating introduction and the inclusion of a selection of Rimbaud's letters, this is the most helpful edition of Rimbaud's astonishing body of work for English-language readers and students of French poetry. Oliver Bernard's translations were described in a Times review by Robert Nye as quite outstanding - so intrinsically poetic that it comes as no surprise to find that Bernard writes original verse himself .

Illuminations

Illuminations

Author: Arthur Rimbaud Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 26/05/2011

Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations , first published in 1886, changed the way the world is seen; in John Ashbery the book has a translator whose virtuosic originality brings Rimbaud's vision to life in English. This 'crystalline jumble', a 'disordered collection of magic lantern slides', John Ashbery writes, is the very root of modernity, 'still emitting pulses' of energy over a century after it was written. 'If we are absolutely modern - and we are - it's because Rimbaud commanded us to be.' Ashbery's rendering of the forty-four poems relays the kaleidoscopic dazzle of the original, a 'Splendide Hotel built amid the tangled heap of ice floes and the polar night', where the Witch 'will never tell us what she knows, and which we do not know'. This major new translation presents the French text in parallel and includes a preface by John Ashbery.

Illuminations

Author: Arthur Rimbaud Format: Hardback Release Date: 16/05/2011

First published in 1886, Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations?the work of a poet who had abandoned poetry before the age of twenty-one?changed the language of poetry. Hallucinatory and feverishly hermetic, it is an acknowledged masterpiece of world literature, still unrivaled for its haunting blend of sensuous detail and otherworldly astonishment. In Ashbery's translation of this notoriously elusive text, the acclaimed poet and translator lends his inimitable voice to a venerated classic. W. H. Auden recognized the strong affinities between Ashbery's poetry and Rimbaud's Illuminations in his 1956 introduction to Ashbery's first book, Some Trees, noting that the imaginative life of the human individual stubbornly continues to live by the old magical notions. And it is here, in the crystalline jumble and disordered collection of magic lantern slides of Illuminations, as Ashbery writes in the Preface, that we can rediscover this essential lineage. Absolute modernity was for Rimbaud acknowledging the simultaneity of all of life, the condition that nourishes poetry at every second. [...] If we are absolutely modern?and we are?it's because Rimbaud commanded us to be. Ashbery's idiomatic and lyrical translations of these forty-four texts convey the originality of Rimbaud's vision to English-speaking readers of a new century.

'Rimbaud, the poet of revolt, and the greatest' Albert Camus Rimbaud is the enfant terrible of French literature, the precocious genius whose extraordinary poetry is revolutionary in its visionary, hallucinatory content and its often liberated forms. He wrote all his poems between the ages of about 15 and 21, after which he turned his back on family, friends, and France to roam the world. In his final years he was a trader in the Horn of Africa. Out of the brief, colourful life and the poetry of sensory wildness has been created the myth of Rimbaud, an enduring icon of youth, rebellion, and freedom. But behind the myth lies a poetic adventure of high ambition and painful rigour, poignant yet heroic. Rimbaud is one of the greatest French poets of all times. This bilingual edition provides all of Rimbaud's poems, with the exception of his Latin verses and some small fragments. It also includes some of his prose pieces, chosen because they offer a commentary on his poetic concerns. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

One of the world's most influential poets, Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) is remembered as much for his volatile personality and tumultuous life as he is for his writings, almost all of which he produced before the age of twenty. Paul Schmidt's acclaimed collection brings together his complete poetry, prose, and letters, including The Drunken Boat, The Orphans' New Year, After the Flood, and A Season in Hell. Complete Works is divided into eight seasons -Childhood, the Open Road, War, the Tormented Heart, the Visionary, the Damned Soul, a Few Belated Cowardices, and the Man with the Wind at His Heels-that reflect the facets of Rimbaud's life. Insightful commentary by Schmidt reveals the courage, vision, and imagination of Rimbaud's poetry and sheds light on one of the most enigmatic figures in letters.

A phenomenonally precicious schoolboy, Rimbaud was still a teenager when he became notorious as Europe's most shocking and exhilarating poet. During his brief 5-year reign as the enfant terrible of French literature he produced an extraordinary body of poems that range from the exquisite to the obsene, while simultaneously living a life of dissolute excess with his lover and fellow poet, Verlaine. At the age of 21, he abandonned poetry and travelled across Europe before settling in Africa as an arms trader. This edition sets the two sides of Rimbaud side by side with a sparkling translation of his most exhilarating poetry and a generous selection of the letters from the harsh and colourful period of his life as a colonial trader.

Written by Rimbaud at the age of 18 in the wake of his tempestuous affair with fellow poet Paul Verlaine, A Season in Hell has been a touchstone for anguished poets, artists, and lovers for more than a century.
