Arthur Calder-Marshall was a novelist, playwright, travel writer and essayist. At the time of writing Glory Dead he was a member of the British Communist Party and a member of the left-wing Readers & Writers Group along with writers such as Mulk Raj Anand. He was born in 1908 and died in 1992.
