Towards a Postliberal Regionalism? Synopsis

Research on regional groupings is expanding and bridging the gap between EU studies and International relations. What is missing is a student friendly presentation of the phenomenon of multidimensional cooperation among neighboring states, its relevant variations/diversities and similarities, its interplay with globalization and the changing multipolar international order. This study's focus is the comparative analysis of those regional organizations and their interrelations with the globalized economy and world politics within the post- hegemonic and post-Cold War era. Focusing on the political and strategic dimension and causes of regionalism involves going beyond controversies of the 90s among economists on the regionalism versus global multilateralism. It involves instead explaining the causes of the flourishing of regional organizations through endogenous and exogenous factors, and studying their current and potential impact on global governance.
