Last night Anne Enright author of The Gathering won the Man Booker 2007 prize. Rather like England and the rugby world cup no critic or bookie has ever put her book in the frame - but on the evening of 16 October 2007 the Man Booker judges disagreed.

The prize was expected to go to either Ian McEwan for On Chesil Beach or Lloyd Jones for Mr Pip, a result mirrored in our reader poll. So the announcement of the prize was a shock for everyone.
