Independent Bookshop Week was first launched in 2006 by the Booksellers Association and it forms a part of the Books Are My Bag campaign. A week dedicated to celebrating independent bookshops nationwide as well as a brilliant time to highlight the vital role that independent bookshops play whithin our local communities.
At LoveReading we love to support Independent Bookshops. Our Bookshop blog feautres features bookshops from across the country, we love virtually visiting them and introducing each new shop to our readers. Bookshops have faced many challenges over the past 18 months and our list of Independent bookshops that were here for us all during lockdown gave us the space to spread the word about bookshops nationwide that were going above and beyond to stay open for business. We were thrilled when Bookshops were allowed to reopen for Independent Bookshop Week last year, and the hard work of Indie Booksellers hasn't stopped in the ups and downs that have happened since.
While the best way to support your local independent bookshop is to visit them or order from them directly, Bookshop.org launched in the UK in November 2020 as an alternative online bookseller that supports the Independent Bookselling sector. First started in America, you can read more about the company in our Q&A with Nicole Vanderbilt. Ahead of Independent Bookshop Week 2021, Bookshop.org announced that they are doubling their contribution to the shared bookshop pool from 10% to 20% meaning independent bookshops will benefit even more from purchases made on this platform during this week.
If you view any book page on our site, you can click on the "Compare Prices" button underneath the book jacket to check prices from a variety of retailers including Bookshop.org, meaning you can support indies across the nation even if you're unable to visit them directly.
Independent bookshops will be celebrating Independent Bookshop Week in their own way, so be sure to keep an eye on your local store's social media so you don't miss out. You can also follow @booksaremybag and #IndieBookshopWeek on social media to find out more about, and take part in the events being run by Books Are My Bag and sponsored by Hachette UK.
If you're looking for new book recommendations, indie booksellers will be happy to assist. Our independent booksellers are absolute gems in our local communities and we couldn't love them more. They have risen to every challenge thrown at them in the past 15 months and we coudn't be more pleased.
And of course, we're here, week in week out all year round, reading, reviewing and recommending so you can find your next favourite book. View our Star Books if you're looking for a sure-fire winning read, or our Collections for more thematic recommendations. And of course you can search by your favourite genre whether you're a lover of fiction of non-fiction.
