I found this a compelling story about fate changing people’s lives in quite a dramatic way. The principal character, Jim, is a young man, living in Liverpool, just scraping by in a dead-end job, until fate hands him a lifeline to better things, then almost immediately takes it away again. An unfortunate incident brings him into contact with Zara, a young woman from a very different background, who has come to Liverpool from her comfortable life in Dubai. The short time they spend together ultimately changes life for both of them. Although the story is a bit predictable, it’s very entertaining and an easy read. It’s a character-driven story and the author has really got under the skin of the characters and brought them to life. I’m not sure if this is Hayley Doyle’s first novel, she’s certainly a new author to me, but I would read more of her work - I really enjoyed this one.
